About us
The QuickStart initiative will provide paid job placements for 18-24 year olds based in the Vale of Glamorgan Council. The aim is to provide young people with essential employment skills to enhance their future employment prospects


Based in the Countryside Team within the Place Directorate the Landscape Section strives to preserve and wherever possible enhance the key landscape character attributes that make the Vale such a popular place to live and visit.


We aim to provide landscape architectural services across the Councils portfolio and promote sustainable and appropriate new development and to make a real difference through regeneration activity by providing people with access to employment, facilities and the opportunity to improve their quality of life, whilst conserving, enhancing and effectively managing the countryside and coastal areas within the Vale of Glamorgan.


About the role

Working with and shadowing the Principal Landscape Architect and Landscape Architect you will be engaged in and support the development, design, implementation, and supervision of landscape projects.

Gaining an understanding of the role of the landscape architect in a broad range of activities including design, project management, health and safety, development control and policy within the context of local government.

Hours of work -. 25 hours per week
Rate of pay - National Minimum Wage
Location of placement

  • Docks Office, Subway Road, Barry (minimum 3 days/week)
Contract - Temporary (6 months)

About you

You will need:
Minimum 5 GCSE's including English, Maths and art & design (or equivalent)
3 A levels

Demonstratable interest in Landscape architecture as a future career or be actively pursuing enrolment on a Landscape Architecture or related degree or vocational course.

Full and current driving licence

Additional information

Participants will be an active part of the team and engaged in all aspects of the work shadowing the landscape architect and principal landscape architect as they perform their roles.

You will be mentored by them in all aspects of the landscape architect's role in a local government context.

Training will be provided on specific software and systems used in performing the role as well as well as time to attend online CPD seminars relating to practice as a landscape architect, including technical, health & safety and policy issues.

Participants will gain an understanding of what is required and expected when working in an office environment and as a chartered landscape architect within the local government environment.

Better understand the full range of opportunities and specialisms within the role of a landscape architect to help them determine how they want to develop through their future learning and career.
