PhD Studentship: Monitoring and Evaluation of Composite Pipes using Structural Waves

Southampton, Southampton, United Kingdom University of Southampton Full time

PhD Supervisor: Michal Kalkowski

Supervisory Team: Dr Michal Kalkowski, Prof Michele Meo

Project description

We invite applications for a PhD position in the field of non-destructive evaluation (NDE) of composite pipes. This research will explore both guided and bulk waves, aiming to develop practical, field-applicable monitoring solutions.

The project will specifically address the challenge of delamination/debonding in cylindrical composite structures using guided waves. With a mix of theoretical work and practical measurements, the successful candidate will develop a deep understanding of wave interactions in composite materials. You will use and advance state-of-the-art modelling methods, including both semi-analytical approaches and comprehensive high-fidelity numerical simulations. This capability will be instrumental in developing new imaging and sensing techniques, vital for detecting complex flaws in composite pipes, which is the main aim of the project. The research will cover various pipe environments and evaluate the effectiveness of various sensing technologies.

We seek applicants with a solid technical background (mechanical engineering, materials, applied physics) background, possessing strong mathematical and scientific computing skills. Experience in material characterisation, acoustics and monitoring is desirable, but not essential.

You will be joining the Dynamics Group within the University's renowned Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, and work with a cross-departmental supervisory team. Your project will benefit our cutting-edge experimental and numerical facilities, including IRIDIS - the high-performance computing cluster, and muVIS ) - the advanced material characterisation centre. You will also benefit from interactions with our industrial and academic partners in the UK and Europe. The University of Southampton is one of UK's leading engineering research centres – an excellent venue for your research adventure.

Feel free to contact Michal Kalkowski from the Dynamics Group ) for an informal chat about the project and pursuing a PhD in Southampton. We look forward to hearing from you
