Ocean Career: East Suffolk Council GIS and Remote Sensing Officer

ECO Posted On November 7, 2023

East Suffolk Council is an exciting place to work, delivering essential local services and making a real difference to a quarter of a million people across East Suffolk.

We currently have an opportunity to join East Suffolk Council's Coastal Partnership East Team as a GIS and Remote Sensing Officer for the Resilient Coasts Project.

Coastal Partnership East are responsible for 92 km of the 173 km of coastline in Norfolk and Suffolk, from Holkham in North Norfolk to Landguard Point in Felixstowe. There are approximately 352,000 people who live in the direct coastal zone and many more that work on and visit our coast.

The nature of the coast is varied with a range of undefended soft eroding cliff frontages, sand dunes, shingle ridges and largely sand and shingle beaches many of which are highly designated. In terms of the distribution of population the coast is largely rural interspersed with several smaller seaside towns. The Resilient Coast Project will encompass two thirds of this frontage with the remaining North Norfolk District Council frontage taking forward further adaptation work in the Coastal Transition Accelerator Program.

Your role

In this new role you will proactively lead, manage, develop, analyze and report on the Geographical Information System (GIS) development, usage and training across Coastal Partnership East. You will integrate learning from the Resilient Coasts project program and work alongside the wider team to develop innovative resilience and adaptation approaches that can be transferred locally and nationally.

As the technical specialist, you will provide support to the wider team and partners to identify, manage and develop the remote sensing data capture and GIS capabilities, and play an active role in supporting and enabling project development, including the identification and recommendation of appropriate business opportunities.

What you will need

With a relevant qualification to HNC level or GIS related diploma, or extensive experience gained through on the job training and working in the GIS field, you should have a sound knowledge of the definition and creation of GIS data layers, including their ongoing maintenance and management, familiarity with Ordnance Survey digital products and other geospatial digital formats, as well as experience of successful operational delivery in a changing environment.

You should be self-motivated with a pro-active approach and the ability to promote new technology and digital services within a rapidly developing working environment. You will have highly developed analytical skills and a proactive approach to problem solving. The ability to translate raw data into meaningful intelligence, and excellent communication skills are essential. You will also have your own means of transport, and be comfortable with attending various site along the coast for data collection and meetings.

If you think you have what it takes to be successful in this role, even if you don't meet all of the essential requirements, please apply. We would appreciate the opportunity to consider your application.
