This is a specialist medical photographer's post within the medical illustration team and works closely with the regional cleft lip and palate team. The post holder provides the full range of medical photography duties and will have a particular responsibility for the management of the Cleft Photography and 3D imaging within the Trust. The post-holder is expected to attend Cleft Lip and Palate (CL&P) Team meetings and will provide training to other members of the Medical Illustration team.

The North Thames Cleft Centre offers a comprehensive multidisciplinary service for cleft lip and cleft palate. The CL&P 'core' team consists of plastic & maxillofacial surgeons, orthodontists, specialist nursing staff, specialist speech and language therapists, clinical psychologists, an audiologist, a paediatrician, and a wider multi-disciplinary team, which includes radiographers, anaesthetists, ward staff, and medical photographers. The clinical team are supported by numerous administrative and technical staff.

The post holder will undertake CL&P photography at Great Ormond Street Hospital routinely and also, supports Cleft clinics and audits at other sites in the North Thames Cleft Centre. The postholder seeks to develop the cleft photographic and video work in line with evolving best practice in the area, both from within the North Thames Cleft Centre, other Cleft Networks in the UK, and from international experience where relevant.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will undertake a range of clinical and corporate photographic, and videographic activities without supervision following local standards and guidelines.

The post holder is expected to gain a familiarity with a wide spectrum of medical disorders and know the anatomical planes dividing the human body. The post holder will be required to adhere to the agreed standards and Trust policies and be responsible for ensuring that patients are fully consented.

The post holder will treat patients and service users with appropriate sensitivity and empathy and possess the ability to be able to cope with taking close up images of wounds and other medical conditions, which in some circumstances will be complex and of a sensitive nature.

The post holder will be an experienced and technically skilled photographer who is able to produce high quality images which will be used by clinicians for the purpose of medical records, teaching, publication and legal purposes.

The post holder will also monitor and control access to all photographic images in line with the Trust confidentiality policy. The post will be based mainly at Great Ormond Street Hospital, but the post holder will also be required to provide medical photography services at other sites as required.

  • Degree in Medical Illustration/Clinical Photography
  • Continuing Professional Development
  • Registered as Medical Illustration Practitioners with the Academy of Healthcare Science (AHCS)
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate diploma or equivalent level of knowledge
Experience/KnowledgeEssential criteria
  • Competent in image industry standard manipulation software
  • Competent in the use of Mac/PC computers and Microsoft Office 365
  • Medical photography principles and practice
  • All aspects of patient confidentiality and how it transfers to the Medical Illustration department
