The Directorate of School Professional Services (SPS) provides support for three Academic Schools; Registry, Technical Services and Administration teams. The directorate's focus is to provide an outstanding service to all our users supporting and enhancing the student experience.

SPS Technical Services (Science) is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Technician to support the delivery of GCU programmes in Biological and Biomedical Sciences (BIO) within the Charles Oakley Laboratories. The successful candidate will be a core member of a Technical Team providing practical laboratory support to the teaching activities within the department to ensure our students and staff have an excellent experience within a quality multidisciplinary technical service.

The successful candidate will undertake technical responsibilities within the subject areas of Microbiology and Molecular Biology to support Undergraduate (UG) and Post Graduate (PG) practical labs.
- Proficiencies in Microbiology aseptic techniques, safe use and disposal of Microbes, the ability to identify, characterise and inoculate microbes, preparation and dispensing of media and safe use of autoclaves for decontamination and sterilisation purposes.
- Proficiencies in Molecular Biology techniques/skills such as DNA/RNA isolation and analysis, plasmid preps, agarose gel preparation, gel electrophoresis, buffer preparation, PCR/qPCR and working knowledge/use of associated equipment.

Other essential criteria for the role includes:
- Excellent organisational skills and problem-solving abilities.
- Evidence of being able to work flexibly and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Ability to maintain clear and accurate records, collate and organise and upload data.
- Experience of working to regulatory Health and Safety processes/procedures including COSHH and Risk Assessments.
- Ability to manage and prioritise conflicting workloads.

Additionally, as a core member of the Technical Team, you may also be required to support the work of other members of the Technical Team to ensure that full support is available. Therefore, subject knowledge and practical experience of Protein quantification /isolation, generating and analysing protein standard curves using Biuret/Bradford's assay methods would be desirable.
