In line with the government's priority to increase access and availability of mental health and wellbeing support for children and young people, the Education Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP) role is an exciting opportunity to deliver evidence-based early interventions, working across both educational settings and healthcare sectors in England.


A Trainee Education Mental Health Practitioner will be expected to work under supervision as part of a dynamic mental health team in a creative environment where evidence-based interventions, new ideas, ways of working and supporting children and young people (CYP) are actively encouraged.

This approach requires flexibility and adaptability, and above all a passion for working with CYP in educational settings.

To build and maintain the following Key Relationships:

  • Educational supervisor: monthly
  • Higher Education Institution: weekly during term time (3 days, then reducing to 2)
  • Placement supervisor: weekly
  • Designated Lead for mental health in schools: as required
  • MHST colleagues, Specialist School Staff and parents/carers
  • Children, young people and their families
  • General Manager CAMHS
  • CAMHS Senior Management Group
  • Multidisciplinary colleagues in CAMHS
  • Other professionals working with children and young people in social services, health, education, youth justice system and the voluntary sector
  • Trust corporate departments including Human Resources, Training and Development, IM&T etc.
To work in partnership with schools to assess and deliver a range of mental health interventions within school settings.

This may involve group work or direct work with children/young people as well as offering specialist mental health-based consultation, and advice around mental health to teaching staff.

Work with teachers and school staff to identify, support and provide consultation for children and young people with emerging mental health needs, as part of a whole school approach to mental health and wellbeing

Build relationships across services to ensure joint delivery of care

Deliver Whole School Approach Training Packages


The training programme for this post will consist of academic and supervised practice learning across mental health services and educational settings, such as primary and secondary schools, and further education colleges.


Delivery of the programme will be provided through a combination of taught days within UCL in collaboration with The Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families, independent self-guided study days, and experience gained in the Newham MHST.


The Trainee Education Mental Health Practitioner role will:

  • Work closely alongside a team of mental health professionals delivering a wide range of evidence informed interventions, under supervision.
  • Develop and practice evidencebased skills under supervision to work directly with children, young people, and families.
  • Develop and practice evidencebased skills under supervision to carry out holistic and childcentered mental health assessments, including risk assessments.
  • Enthusiasm for extending brief low intensity forms of help offered to children and parents around mental health needs in education settings
  • A high degree of professional autonomy and selfmanagement and will be required to account for their professional practice through appraisal and audit
  • Motivation to implement initiatives to benefit pupils their families and education staff
