We are looking for a deputy editor to join us on the healthcare team to take day-to-day responsibility for one of our membership magazines - IOSH magazine for the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).


We need to produce high-quality content that aids the knowledge development of the country's health and safety professionals, and helps the client to meet its communications objectives.

This role is key to this.


The healthcare team is responsible for the content, websites, e-comms and social media for a range of clients within the clinical and health and safety sphere, so the deputy editor role would also provide support across the healthcare portfolio.


Your days will be really varied - from conducting an interview and writing it up, to jumping on a videocall with a client, to writing a brief and liaising with freelance journalists over copy queries.

What's more, you'll be working with a lovely and lively team operating within a friendly, multi-award-winning company and you'd be integral to both the team and the wider company.


Other responsibilities will include:

  • Writing for the magazine, and repurposing and repackaging work where required
  • Subedit and proof content (Microsoft word, InDesign and pdf stages)
  • Deputising for the editor
  • Liaising with design to produce creative and accessible content

There has arguably never been a more important time for IOSH - the chartered body and largest membership organisation for safety and health professionals - to champion health and safety in the workplace.

Active in around 130 countries, IOSH aims to act as adviser, advocate and trainer for health and safety professionals.

Since 2020, the pandemic has caused sweeping changes throughout organisations of all shapes and sizes around the world, while closer to home in the UK, Brexit promises to create challenges and change within workplace regulation - the stuff of life and death within occupational safety - for years to come.

IOSH magazine contributes to these important conversations in a number of significant ways:

  • Keeping members abreast of industry news and important developments essential when working with the law
  • Using original journalism to feature best practice
  • Creating a knowledge bank of essential information in a variety of formats, including reports, podcasts, webinars, and videos
  • Discussion and analysis of the most important issues within safety, health (including mental health and wellbeing), leadership and management, sustainability and human factors and much more

You:

  • Excellent journalistic skills (degree level or equivalent) and proven editorial experience, particularly in editing copy, with immaculate attention to detail
  • An ability to create compelling content for a member organisation
  • Experience in commissioning
  • Solid project management experience
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to multitask effectively
  • Confident in making decisions
  • Creativity, innovation and a vision for developing media brands across channels
  • Exude enthusiasm and demonstrate drive
  • A willingness to understand the objectives of the publishing client, its mission and its initiatives
  • Handson experience with MS Office and InDesign, and a basic knowledge of Photoshop
  • General healthcare/health and safety knowledge and/or experience of publishing for membership organisations is desirable but not essential.
