Purpose of Role:

As an active senior member of the Technology and Process Innovation (TPI) team the Senior Scientist will be responsible for the delivery of next generation scalable immuno-cell therapy processes across our project portfolio.

With a track record as a subject matter expert in immunotherapy process or analytical development for cell and gene therapies, the Senior Scientist will also help drive new business opportunities and where required liaise directly with Collaborators to develop project proposals.


Key Accountabilities:

To work closely with the Lead Scientists, Heads of Department, and Directors, to ensure the successful delivery of project outputs to schedule and to budget.

Using their experience in development of immunotherapy products, design processes and analytics, in line with regulatory guidelines and with minimal lab-supervision.

Working in a matrix-team environment contribute expertise and drive the design and planning of laboratory work, ensuring scientific rigor.

Approving experimental plans, witnessing completed experiments in the electronic laboratory notebook, ensuring raw data is processed according to data integrity guidelines and stored according to company policies.

Record, analyse and communicate experimental findings in electronic laboratory notebooks, scientific reports, posters and peer-reviewed publications and present results internally and to external collaborators.

Maintain high standards of laboratory practices in all development activities.

Enabling the quality and timely delivery of scientific research produced by the laboratory teams for assigned projects through matrix management of scientists and technicians.

Production of protocols, plans, risk assessments, SOPs, and documentation to allow development of analytical protocols and transfer to internal manufacture development and/or external collaborators.

Supporting project managers with accurate timelines and predicted external spend.
Supporting the business development team as a subject matter expert to facilitate new commercial and collaborative R&D projects.
Support the personal development of more junior members of the team through line management responsibilities and matrix management.

Laboratory responsibilities:
Production of appropriate SOP's and Risk Assessments as required.
Maintaining an up-to-date training file and ensuring all appropriate documentation is completed in line with the QMS.

Act as "super user" for appropriate equipment and provide training to team members from the analytical, process development and manufacturing.

Support the undertaking of communal lab cleaning tasks and comply with the Company's laboratory procedures (e.g. gowning, aseptic technique training).
Contribute to housekeeping and Environmental Health and safety within the laboratory.

Experience:
Extensive experience in autologous or allogeneic immunotherapy bioprocess development is essential.
Knowledge of and hands on experience with T cells or human embryonic or iPS cells is essential.
Demonstrable experience of multicolour flow cytometry including panel selection, assay optimization and data analysis is essential.
Experience of cell culture bioprocess development is essential.
Knowledge of 2D and 3D cell culture using flask/ G-REX and stirred tank bioreactor systems.
Knowledge of analytical assays for immunotherapy characterisation (e.g., flow cytometry, immuno-phenotyping, cytokine analysis and cytotoxicity assays).
Understanding of analytical characterisation of pluripotent stem cells and their differentiation processes (e.g. cell morphology and phenotypic analysis, gene expression, karyotyping, qPCR).
Experience with PAT for in-process control and release is desirable.
Experience in the application of Design of Experiment principles to study design is desirable.
Experience in utilising and assessing novel analytical technologies associated with cell and gene therapy manufacture is desirable.

Highly motivated, pragmatic and practical to support the mission of the Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult to accelerate the development of a commercial cell and gene-based therapy industry in the UK.

Education / Qualifications:
~ PhD with 3+ years industrial experience or BSc with 7+ years industrial experience in life sciences or cell and gene therapy.
