Cromer, Norfolk, United Kingdom Beeston Hall School Trust Ltd Full time

School leavers from the UK and, sometimes, other countries have routinely spent varied and fulfilling gap years, contributing to the many facets of life at Beeston Hall.

Set in an outstanding beach side location (the cliff top is 600 metres from the front door of the school) but also benefitting from 700 acres of National Trust woodland just behind the school offering beautiful walks, runs, scenery and space to relax.

The school is situated within walking distance of local towns and the city of Norwich is 45 minutes away.

The village of West Runton is a 5 minute walk, the town of Sheringham is just a little further, Cromer is 3 miles away and towns such as Holt, Aylsham and North Walsham are all within a 12 mile radius.

Norwich which is a hive of activity is on a direct train line from West Runton and is about 25 miles away or 35 minutes on the train.

Gap Students (Gappies) gain invaluable leadership experience and life skills, alongside a rewarding year in a friendly boarding community, with a total staff of approximately 65 people.

Accommodation is in a separate house, on site, capable of housing up to four gap students all with their own individual rooms and shared bathrooms and communal spaces such as kitchen and lounge.

Depending upon our particular needs at any one time, you will probably find yourself involved in the following:

  • Helping with games and PE (particularly skills in netball and cricket)
  • Helping in the boarding house (sometimes at weekends)
  • Depending upon your interests, helping with drama productions, music recitals, supporting IT lessons, etc
  • Hearing individual children read during their normal English lessons
  • Working on the school grounds
  • Supervisory duties upstairs in the boarding houses
  • Helping duty staff at break times
  • Administrative duties to help staff, i.e. photocopying
  • On a rota system accompanying children on the train to London at Exeats
  • Accompanying the school bus morning and/or afternoon
  • Occasional covering of lessons for absent staff

It is expected that you will be at school throughout the term and the training days either side of each term, although leave of absence may be granted in special circumstances.

The dress code for Gap Assistants is normally tracksuit and/ or Rugby shirt/sweatshirt in Beeston colours. We will provide you with Beeston Hall sports kit. Clothes should be comfortable, clean and tidy. Although this is casual dress, it is important you look smart. For trips out, or more formal occasions, it is expected that you will dress accordingly, i.e. skirt/ trousers/dress/ polished shoes/jacket and tie.

You will normally be given one day off midweek, although it is expected that you will be at school between 10.00 am pm every alternate Sunday.

Your chief job on these occasions will be to help offer activities for the boarders:
sport, walks to Roman Camp, treasure hunts, accompanying trips out, etc.

On some occasions you might be asked if it is possible for you to accompany a trip in the afternoon rather than work in the morning.

In such cases you should be asked well in advance. All your meals during the term time will be provided, although obviously this ceases during the holidays.

Previous gappies have brought a range of useful skills and qualifications (coaching sport, life-guarding, music, dance, photography, art) to our busy school community, but learnt many more, through commitment, initiative and enthusiasm, which are the main aptitudes necessary.

By being flexible and ready for any challenge, gappies often pick up new skills which become extremely useful for the next stage of their education and/or employment.
