The dental care group at Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Kings College London are seeking to appoint a full time Programme Director Programme for the Dental Therapy and Hygiene course.

The post holder will work closely with the Clinical Director (KCH), General Manager (KCH) and Head of Dental Nursing (KCH), Dean of Education (KCL) and Deputy Director (KCL) to manage and deliver the BSc programme and ensure that the course meets the clinical and academic quality assurance standards as set by Kings College London and the General Dental Council.

A commitment to the delivery of high-quality patient care, service innovation and education is an essential requirement of this role.


The post holder will be responsible for the education (clinical and academic) of student dental therapist/hygienists within the School of Dental Hygiene and Therapy and for meeting the General Dental Council learning outcomes (30 per year x 3 years).

The post holder will lead on the clinical supervision of 6,000 outpatient contacts p.a.

across various sites and specialties that are carried out by students whilst maintaining the Trust's standards of quality and safety in terms of service delivery and the University's standards in terms of academic performance and student management.

This is in conjunction with meeting the standards and requirements of various stakeholders such as the GDC Education quality assurance team and Health Education England.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical & Academic Responsibilities


To lead on the development, delivery, quality assurance, Assessment of the Dental Hygiene & Therapy (DHT) Programme, to be delivered in partnership by KCL and by KCH.

To have lead responsibility for

  • Ensuring that all aspects of the terms of reference for the DHT Programme are met and in particular focusing on clinical dental treatment within the educational context of the training programme.
Line management of the DHT Tutors.

Providing expert advice on the development and organisation of the education of dental hygienists and dental therapists.


Delivering the DHT Programme in compliance with local and national regulatory standards and to ensure that all DHT Tutors meet prescribed programme standards.


  • Agree the programme structure, teaching and learning strategies assessment design and training delivery.
Agree quality measures which align to the GDCs standards or Education, ensuring standards are clear, transparent and well communicated.


Support the preparation, conduct and follow-up action for visits and assessments and/or accreditation of programmes by external bodies such as the GDC.

Participate in university-level quality-management processes, such as module evaluation, annual reporting cycle, programme review, quinquennial review and peer support, working closely with members of the Faculty professional services team

Ensure that all Tutors meet the required training standards and to develop continuing professional development programmes for the team.

Support the Admissions and induction process for DHT students.


Plan, organise and deliver a DHT curriculum, to include academic and clinical teaching, assessment and pastoral support through the Personal Tutor arrangements.

Provide educational development for the Tutors.

Assess student competence and progression, engaging with relevant KCL committees.

Work with nominated KCL staff on student management including welfare, fitness to practice, competence and professional standards.


Ensure that mechanisms are in place for ensuring that safety arrangements, risk assessments and ethics approval are conducted with regard to teaching sessions/ projects carried out by students.

To work with the nominated Clinical Director (KCH ) to

  • Provide assurance that the quality and safety of clinical care delivered as part of clinical education complies with Trust standards.
Provide assurance that clinical risk and clinical governance issues are managed in compliance with Trust requirements.

Provide assurance that all patient related activities complies with wider NHS performance standards.

Line manage the DHT Tutors and associated staff, including recruitment, induction, appraisal, statutory and mandatory training and personal development.
