To diagnose and manage Orthoptic paediatric and adult patients encompassing all aspects of the Orthoptic Service to Coventry, Rugby and Community assisting where appropriate in departmental organisation and undergraduate Orthoptist / other professional clinical training.

This is a permanent FULL TIME (37.5hrs) post based at University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW)

To be, as an autonomous practitioner, legally and professionally responsible and accountable for the management of patients seen within the Orthoptic service of UHCW NHS Trust.

To prioritise own clinical caseload and keep accurate contemporaneous records.

To assess, diagnose, and continually review the needs of patients within the Orthoptic Service, developing individual treatment plans and organising discharge / onward referral where appropriate

To assess patients pre
- and post
- operative
- discussing surgical management options with the Consultant Ophthalmologist. To assist the Consultant Ophthalmologist with patients undergoing botulinum toxin treatment and ocular realignment using adjustable suture techniques.

The applicant may be a newly qualified post graduate Orthoptist who wants to gain invaluable experience with a mentoring programme provided or with some post graduate experience -looking to expand their knowledge and skills in a large dynamic award winning team.


  • To assess, diagnose and treat patients with special needs and / or specific learning difficulties in both the hospital and community setting.
  • To accept direct referrals from eye casualty, neurologists, neurosurgeons, maxillo-facial surgeons, endocrinologists, paediatricians, GPs, Health Visitors and refer on as required.
  • To actively participate in pre-school filtering, special school and school age vision screening within the service catchment areas in order to identify and prioritise children requiring referral to the Consultant Ophthalmologist.
  • To accept clinical responsibility for the Orthoptic management of complex ocular movement disorders.
  • To instil eye drops for ophthalmic investigation in accordance with Patient Group Directives.
  • To participate in neuro-ophthalmology, oculoplastic, paediatric and adult clinics.
  • To liaise with and give detailed Orthoptic information to members of the Orthoptic team and other professionals as necessary in order to establish a high quality co-ordinated service, linking as necessary with education, social services and other hospital and community based health care professionals.
  • To provide condition related information including prognosis and risk of treatment to patients, relatives and other medical staff. This may be of a sensitive / emotive nature and will need to be communicated verbally and / or non-verbally to ensure that there is full understanding of the condition especially where there is learning or language difficulties.
  • To undertake clinics in Coventry and Rugby as required, at times in a single-handed capacity.
  • To participate if required in visual fields assessment, utilising specific knowledge of visual pathway anatomy and pathology to ensure accurate assessment
  • To participate if required following the necessary training in casualty triage and paediatric casualty and clinical involvement in the anterior segment paediatric clinics
