Job summary:


This is an exciting opportunity to join the Foreign Languages Wing team at the Defence Centre for Language and Culture (DCLC) located within International Group.


The Burnham Lecturer (BL) post is a specialist in German language training and plays an important role in delivering German courses to military personnel.

This is a newly formed department so there is a great opportunity for the right person to shape the future of German language training for Defence.

There are 2 jobs available, advertised as 37 hours each.

Job description:


As a BL you will undertake a range of activities relating to the delivery of German language training to Defence personnel.

Working alongside another BL (and supervised by a Senior Burnham Lecturer (SBL)) you will primarily deliver German language training to a variety of students, undertake design and development of course materials (including a range of military themed materials) and play an important role in quality assurance activities which ensure the continuous improvement of language delivery.

As part of our delivery strategy, you will play an important role in implementing a blended approach.

As such, you will be expected to stay up to date on the latest research, delivery approaches and technologies to support language learning.

This role is primarily face to face and is located at the Defence Academy, Shrivenham.

Please note that this post requires native or near native German and English language skills. This will be tested as a technical skill at interview.

About our Team
The International Group permanent staff comprises 80 personnel over two sites, of whom approximately two thirds are Civil Service.

It is headed up by a Colonel (OF5) and DCLC is headed up by a military OF4 and a civil servant B2.

The output of DCLC is training students to a required level in a variety of languages and associated cultures, in preparation for a range of Defence operational roles.

The German BL role sits within Foreign Languages Wing and works alongside another German language BL, together with contracted tutors when required.

Person specification:

MAIN OBJECTIVES

Teaching/Pedagogic Work:

  • Demonstrate full range of required competencies in the provision and delivery of German language training across all 4 skill areas at NATO STANAG SLP 1111 to 4444 as required, in conformity with the Defence Systems Approach to Training (DSAT) and in accordance with Burnham Lecturer Terms and Conditions of service
  • Monitor, account for and report on student performance to include the generation of student profiles and course reports
  • Provide educational guidance/mentoring to students
  • Manage provision of lesson packs and course materials to students
  • Conduct formative assessment in accordance with DSAT Policy
  • Support SBL in the production of timetables and student differentiation
  • Support the drive for Continuous Improvement, particularly in student proficiency and summative performance

Curriculum Formation, Adaptation of Teaching Programmes and Development of Teaching Materials:

  • In accordance with Quality Assurance direction, design new courses in response to emerging requirements derived from the Foreign Language Training Statement of Training Requirement and in accordance with DSAT
  • Support the development and implementation of Defencerelevant Immersion Training overseas

Course Development:

  • Assist in programming and integration of relevant cultural training
  • Support SBL in the production of timetables and student differentiation
  • Develop and maintain course materials to ensure relevance and currency
  • Maintain efficient storage, retrieval, availability and distribution of learning materials via the Virtual Learning Environment and other media in accordance with Defence Information Management policy
  • Integrate and use Technology Enhanced Learning resources in course development
