We are looking for a highly motivated, resilient self-starter to fill this post of Support Worker for the SSBSS service, for Mind in Somerset.

You will be part of a small team dedicated to supporting people from 5yrs+ through the devastating loss of a death by suicide, and due to our Early Response provision, this will sometimes be within hours of someone taking their own life.

Key Tasks

  • Liaise with the Police and Public Health to gather information of suspected suicides, ensuring that support is offered the bereaved
  • Be willing and proactive in maintaining your own mental wellbeing, this will include separate management and clinical supervision, and the completion of a comprehensive Wellness Plan.
  • To be able to represent suicide bereavement lived experience from the perspectives and experience of others as well as your own so that all voices have equal representation, value and context.
  • To always work with your clients needs at the forefront of your mind, and a broader idea of how our systems can work for the client.
  • Develop positive working relationships with partner services to triage and gather information relating to third party referrals
  • Provide 121 support to individuals bereaved by suicide as agreed with the Project Manager.
  • To be an advocate for the Orange Button suicide prevention scheme and support admin tasks around the programme where needed
  • Be responsible for use of a debrief service after every emotional engagement.
  • Monitoring of suicide reporting in the media to ensure it adheres to the Samaritans Media Guidelines for Reporting Suicide.
  • Attend the quarterly Suicide Audit Meeting as required.
  • To adhere to the organisational policies and procedures within Mind in Somerset.
  • To keep up to date with all relevant suicide bereavement legislation and good practise. Training will be provided.
  • To network with organisations and promote the service and its development.
  • To maintain accurate record keeping/documentation and ensure that any storing or sharing of confidential information is in line with current GDPR regulations.
  • To work considerately as part of a small but diverse team of professionals and people with lived experience, many of whom are volunteers.

Responsibilities to staff and volunteers

  • Our volunteers are a vital part of our framework, who give up their time to support others so must always be treated with the utmost respect and recognition for their work.
  • As many of our volunteers have lived experience of bereavement by suicide, you must always be aware of their emotional wellbeing in all situations.
