The Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service (Cymru) is Wales's exciting and innovative aeromedical/ car-based Pre-Hospital and transfer service.

The Wales Air Ambulance Charity provide helicopters and fast response road vehicles. EMRTS also collaborates with Wales' two HM Coastguard helicopters when necessary.


EMRTS delivers several levels of response which includes consultants, critical care practitioners and helicopter transfer practitioners and is committed to providing high quality clinical care in both the pre-hospital / and inter hospital transfer environments.


We are now recruiting for additional Consultants to join our teams across our four Welsh bases which include Caernarfon, Dafen, Welshpool and Cardiff*.

The service operates across the whole 24-hour period, night cover is provided from Cardiff.


To qualify for this exciting role, you must be a substantive Consultant in Emergency Medicine, Anaesthesia or Intensive Care Medicine who is fully registered with the GMC and who has significant demonstrable experience in the pre-hospital/transfer care setting.

This will include completion of a Pre-hospital Emergency Medicine training programme or equivalent. It is essential that you are ambitious, highly motivated and able to remain calm under pressure.

Selection for these posts are provisionally scheduled to take place on 22nd/23rdApril at the Dafen Airbase.

There are two main service activities, both delivered by teams consisting of a Consultant and Critical Care Practitioner:

  • Pre-hospital Critical Care. EMRTS attends the scene of seriously injured or ill patients requiring specialist care together with senior decision making skills. The aim of EMRTS is to bring the resuscitation room to the patient, providing rapid access to critical care interventions and safe transfer of critically ill or injured patients to an appropriate centre.
  • Retrieval. Healthcare facilities in Wales will request an EMRTS Critical Care Consultant and a Critical Care Practitioner to resuscitate, stabilise and safely transfer patients to definitive care. This includes hospitals, urgent care facilities, GP practices and Midwife Lead Units and patients of all ages who have life threatening illness or injury.
In addition, EMRTS will also provide critical care support to major incidents and mass casualty events.

EMRTS Consultant Rota

Consultants will work a 12 hour duty period and will be expected to work both day and night shifts. As the service is seven days a week, pro-rata weekend working will be required.


A 12 day hour shift will be remunerated at 3.2 sessions whilst a 12 hour night shift will be remunerated at 4.5 sessions, with the additional allowance of SPA paid to LHB's.

The rota is annualised over 42 weeks allowing for annual, study and professional leave.

The minimum contribution to the clinical rota will be 2 shifts per month, annualised.

It is expected that most consultants will work a minimum of 2 sessions per week, which equates to 26.25 shifts per year.

Some month to month variation in contributions will be inevitable but ongoing totals will be monitored.

It is expected that consultants will offer their availability at least three months in advance. Rostering in three month blocks will allow sufficient flexibility for all consultants to fulfill their sessional commitments.

Consultants are based at Dafen, Cardiff, Welshpool and Caernarfon. Consultants with the flexibility to work at, and contribute to the development of, more than one base (i.e. Dafen/Cardiff/Welshpool/Caernarfon) are particularly welcome

Main responsibilities will include:
Clinical

  • Patient assessment and management in the prehospital and inhospital environments
  • Safe transfer of all timecritical patients to tertiary units from scene or healthcare facilities. This includes neonatal and paediatric patients.
  • Providing prehospital care at major incidents and mass casualty events, including the Forward Medical Advisor and Tactical Medical Advisor. As Top Cover Consultant this will also include the Strategic Medical Advisor role
  • Work in conjunction with critical care practitioners


After a suitable period of employment, consultants may be invited to take part in the EMRTS Top Cover Consultant rota, providing remote advice and assistance to support EMRTS work across Wales.

Aviation

  • Complete medical passenger briefings.
  • Wear correct PPE
  • Participation in preshift briefing and support Preflight planning, as required.
  • Assist the pilot with fire picket duties at engine start up.
  • Utilise on board Radio communications equipment.
  • Support the safe loading/ offloading of the patient within the aircraft environment.
  • General care of the aircraft including equipment stowage, cleaning and tidiness.
  • Aircraft safety both at base and on scene including rotor safety, personnel movement and crowd control.
