The Role


We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic PDRA with experience in cardiac tissue engineering to develop functional models of cardiac tissue which will be used to evaluate new devices and therapies to treat cardiac conditions.


The appointment is offered on a full-time (37 hours per week), fixed-term basis and is tenable for 24 months in the first instance, with an estimated start date of 17th April 2023.


You should hold a PhD (or be nearing completion) in tissue engineering, biomaterials, biofabrication or bioengineering, and have understanding and experience of cell culture.

Key Accountabilities
The appointee will work collaboratively with researchers, technical staff and wider group members under the supervision of Professor Kenny Dalgarno and Drs Jason Gill, Ana Ferreira-Duarte, Piergiorgio Gentile, and Priscila Melo
The successful applicant will research and develop cardiac tissue engineering strategies using a novel bioprinting process (reactive jet impingement), working as part of an interdisciplinary team of researchers
The appointee will have to effectively communicate research results to colleagues, project partners, and to the wider research community through conference presentations and journal papers
The appointee will take a role in the general management and running of the biofabrication laboratory

The Person

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Understanding and experience of cell culture
Ability to carry out original research
Ability to write research journal papers
Ability to communicate and present the research outcomes in front of academic and industrial colleagues
Excellent written and oral English language skills
Effective time management and an ability to work to deadlines
Desirable
Understanding and experience of cardiac tissue engineering
Understanding and experience of the processing and characterisation of hydrogels
Understanding and experience of electrospinning

Attributes and Behaviour
Willingness to contribute to the supervision of Undergraduate, Masters, and PGR students, and to take a role in lab management
Ability to work under supervision, in a collaborative manner with team colleagues at all levels. Demonstrable experience of working as part of a diverse, interdisciplinary team
An ability to work independently under the leadership of the investigators and make decisions within the remit of the role and take responsibility for the outcomes
