Job summary

Diving right in, you meticulously check the quality assurance data for - gamma cameras, counters, calibrators, and PET/CT scanners. Just as you immerse yourself in this task, a call from a colleague interrupts your focus - the clinical team urgently requires your expertise. It's time to roll up your sleeves and manage essential services such as GFR and radio-iodine therapy, ensuring strict adherence to regulations.

As the afternoon unfolds, fresh opportunities await you as the appointed MPE. You embark on a journey to one of three independent sites, where you tackle the challenges of IR(ME)R legislative compliance and implement necessary changes. In addition, you provide support on new equipment such as the GE 870 CZT SPECTCT and Hidex gamma counter. Not stopping there, you step up and unleash your creative genius in establishing and optimising imaging protocols, while also pioneering groundbreaking non-imaging procedures.

Going beyond direct clinical work, you'll lead and participate in groundbreaking service development projects that drive real change. You'll have the opportunity to showcase your findings at national and international conferences. Some recent projects have included evaluating a state-of-the-art robotic PET painting phantom, designing a sophisticated head manikin specifically tailored for sentinel node training, and pushing the boundaries of innovation by exploring the remarkable potential of Varskin as an invaluable tool for extravasated administrations.

Main duties of the job

When you join our small dynamic physics team, you'll have the opportunity to deliver on every aspect of Nuclear Medicine Physics, working within many multi-disciplinary teams both on and offsite to gain a wealth of experience with multi-vendor equipment to really enhance your development with the wealth of opportunities available.

To work as part of a team providing physics support to the Nuclear Medicine Department within the Nuclear Medicine Physics Group. To support specialised diagnostic and therapy services in the Nuclear Medicine Department with clinical, scientific, technical and computing support. To support and manage training elements in the department, including the local STP programme. Direct patient contact is through managing and administering patients with radionuclide therapy and when delivering individual radiation protection advice. Support to other scientific staff in the provision of a Medical Physics service at external sites to which a physics service is provided. This includes at nuclear medicine and PET-CT mobile and fixed site facilities. To become an appointed Medical Physics Expert for nominated external sites in support of compliance with IRMER 2017 regulations. Certified MPEs or sufficiently experienced applicants that are close to apply for MPE certification are encouraged to apply. Routine travel to externally supported sites is expected.

Essential

Good (1st or 2nd class) Honours degree in a relevant scientific discipline MSc in Physics or Medical Physics [or equivalent] IPEM Diploma or equivalent in Medical Physics State registration as a Clinical Scientist Certified Medical Physics Expert

Experience of Research and Development methodology, and experienced in writing scientific and technical reports. At least five years experience in a Hospital Medical Physics Department after obtaining IPEM Diploma or equivalent in Medical Physics Quality of work should be at the level to enable the candidate to work as a Medical Physics Expert

Essential

Able to quickly gather data and evaluate information to provide immediate problemsolving support to other professionals in Nuclear Medicine, such as to deal with equipment fault issues, or patient study problems, or to deal rapidly with non-standard issues in instrumentation testing. Able to communicate Medical Physics based information clearly, for day-to-day support to non-clinical scientists and other physics group members, and able to influence other professionals to follow advice. Able to control electro-mechanical computer controlled imaging systems, for testing and support during patient studies. Able to plan and execute a personal contribution to scientific research projects, following good scientific method, and contributing scientific input to multi-disciplinary projects. Able to present scientific papers at national and international conferences.
