We are looking to appoint 2 full time Consultant Rheumatologists to join our enthusiastic multidisciplinary team at the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust.

These 2 vacancies are replacement posts.

The post holders will join the existing team of Rheumatology at City and/or Sandwell Hospital and provide in-patient support at the eagerly anticipated brand new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital when it opens in 2024


The opening of the new Midland Metropolitan Hospital in 2024 and system working across the ICS and with local partners offers fantastic opportunities to improve rheumatological care, research and training in Birmingham and the Black Country.

Clinical Duties


This includes direct clinical carewith outpatient activity, day case provision, multi-disciplinary meetings, clinical administration related to the above and management of in-patient and ward referrals.

These will be delivered as part of the wider MDT across any of our sites.

On call commitments


The on call commitment for this post is a non-resident telephone advisory service covering the Sandwell and the City hospital sites outside of working hours including weekends.

This is currently a 1 in 8 rota frequency that is remunerated according to category B (2%).


Duties other than those specified will be in accordance with the Job Plan to be agreed with the appointee, the Clinical Director and the Group director and will allow time for administration, teaching, research, clinical audit and Continued Professional Development.

A mentor and development support will be provided to the appointees based on personal and service needs at the Trust.

Information about the Specialty

The Rheumatology Department has a long-established track record of excellence in research, teaching and training. SWBH is nationally recognized for delivering Specialized Rheumatology services including Behçet's Disease, Systemic Vasculitis, Lupus, and Myositis a. SWBH also works with Birmingham Women's Hospital to deliver pre-pregnancy and antenatal clinics at regional level.


Birmingham, with Oxford, Newcastle and Glasgow is part of the Versus Arthritis funded Centre of Excellence in Inflammatory Arthritis and as part of this we run a large portfolio of research studies in inflammatory arthritis including discovery science, experimental medicine and clinical trials.

We have an active portfolio of lupus research including national and international studies, including experimental and clinical studies. We are actively investigating the natural history of SLE, response to biological therapies and cutaneous lupus.

In terms of our interdisciplinary national centre of excellence for Behçet's, there is ongoing grant funded research examining the national epidemiology and outcomes of Behçet's and a programme of clinical research including the recently completed UK bio-Behçet's trial.


Depending on the interests of the appointee, the post holder will be supported to develop in a number of areas where we have existing strength such as early inflammatory arthritis, osteoporosis, Vasculitis, Behçet's disease, and SLE, in addition to teaching and research.
