The successful candidate will work with ten other Consultant Gastroenterologists and seven Consultant Hepatologists in providing general and sub-specialty services through the Trust to its surrounding community and other referring hospitals in the region. The Care Group spans the full range of inpatient, outpatient and endoscopy services and is also supported at a clinical level by specialist nurses, at least four clinical SpRs, research SpRs and four nurse endoscopists.The appointee will have support of the delivery of care for patients with gastrointestinal disease along with nine other colleagues and will deliver 2-3 outpatient clinics per week under the supervision of a named consultant. The casemix could include those referred along the urgent suspected cancer pathway and those referred via the Gastroenterology Clinical Assessment Service (CAS). The post holder may be required to work at either at the St. George's main site, or at the community sites of Queen Mary Hospital, Roehampton, or the Nelson Health Centre, South Wimbledon.

Main duties of the job Role of Physicians Associates in Luminal Gastroenterology: The PA role has been developed to work alongside the luminal specialist doctors. They will be trained to assess and examine gastroenterology patients, present them, initiate and interpret investigations, and recommend treatment. They will be expected to liaise with other professionals and specialities as required and complete necessary documentation relating to their patients. There will also be opportunities to develop specialist skills, such as hydrogen breath tests and capsule endoscopy. They will be supervised by a designated consultant and will also have individual mentors to overview their career development. PAs will represent the department at local and external meetings as appropriate. Job responsibilities The post-holder is expected:
  1. To exercise a high degree of personal autonomy when assessing, managing and planning care for a caseload of specific gastroenterology patients with dyspepsia, upper GI TWR referrals and anaemia.
  2. To develop extensive specialist knowledge and experience in gastroenterology, acting as a resource to the clinical team, allied health professionals, and PCT.

  • BA/BS Degree prior to undertaking PA program
  • The Physician Associate must be a graduate of an accredited Physician Associate training program and be certified by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Associates (NCCPA)
