Job summary

An opportunity has arisen within the Blood Sciences Department at the Diana Princess of Wales Hospital for a Band 8a Laboratory Manager. The successful candidate will be expected to hold FIBMS, equivalent MSc or IBMS HSD although candidates nearing completion of the above or with extensive experience are invited to apply.

The Blood Sciences laboratory at DPOW Hospital is the Blood Sciences capacity site for Path Links Pathology. The Path Links Pathology network receives work from the whole of Lincolnshire. Path Links encompasses Scunthorpe, Goole, Lincoln, Boston and Grantham Hospitals. Grimsby, DPOW is a busy, fast-paced working environment, with excellent training opportunities. Main duties of the job

The post will provide the successful candidate a wide role within pathology which will support their career development.

You will work alongside a team of managers across the five main hospital sites that constitute the Path Links service.

The Grimsby pathology management team are responsible for managing the Louth pathology facility in addition to the main Grimsby site.

You will work jointly to maintain and implement common policies and procedures. The network is very mature in this respect and this is established practice for us.

As a directorate rather than a specialty or site you will work together with the rest of Blood Sciences to maintain and achieve UKAS ISO:15189.

Path Links is part of the Midlands and East 2 (ME2) pathology network which is currently being developed. The postholder will be involved with those developments as they progress.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Management of the blood sciences laboratories from a technical, personnel, financial and quality management perspective Project management and oversight of developments including implementation of new methods and equipment and process changes to improve efficiency and patient safety Ensure departmental compliance with UKAS ISO:15189 Ensure incidents and errors are reported to relevant bodies and action plans are enacted to prevent recurrence and recorded on our quality management systems Plan and oversee training and competency assessments for all staff working in the department Work with colleagues across the Path Links Directorate under the leadership of the Blood Sciences Directorate Operational Manager to ensure standardised and efficient practices that meet and can evidence relevant quality standards are embedded in the department Overall responsibility for quality control and external quality assurance for areas under their line management A source of expertise in terms of specialist knowledge. Successful candidate would work closely with advanced practitioner staff to gain knowledge and understanding of processes and challenges in all areas under their line management Work with the immunology manager to jointly manage the department and cross-cover the absence of each other Maintain knowledge and competence within their specialty in order to be able to support the out-of-hours service in case of emergency need. This may involve occasional out of hours working but this is not expected to happen with any degree of regularity.

Essential

oFellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences (FIBMS) or MSc. oState registration with Health Profession Council oMinimum 3 years previous experience at band 7 grade in an area of Blood Sciences (Haematology, Blood Transfusion, Chemistry, Immunology or Andrology
