A PT Environmental Health Officer is required to be responsible for the efficient execution of the range of duties reasonably requested of and commensurate with the professional competence of a qualified Environmental Health Officer.

To secure the implementation of the Council's policy objectives and strategies for Operational Services, as they affect the Environmental Health Division.


Key responsibilities:

  • Assist with the achievement of the Council's corporate objectives and in particular those relating to or linking with the Environmental Health Division.
  • Inspect premises, activities, food, water, chemical substances, plant and equipment, investigate complaints and initiate any action required.
  • Support and assist in the formal training of employees, trainees and students from within the division or who are assigned to the Division and who require a knowledge of the team's professional functions.
  • Undertake day to day/on site supervision of such nominated technical staff or trainees that may be assigned for a specific task/function/period of time, also on site supervision of any manual staff as may be required to carry out the task/function.
  • Assist with the preparation of business plans, budget estimates and work programmes as required.
  • Prepare or assist in the preparation of reports and financial or statistical information as required including matters relating to annual reports, the Council's Community and Performance Plans and reports to the Council and its Committees.
  • Attend Council, Committee and other meetings with outside bodies as required, as a representative of the Service and/or the Borough Council and, if necessary, report thereon.
  • Ensure that information systems are secure and are being operated in accordance with the appropriate legislation and the Council's policies and procedures.
  • Undertake work out of normal office hours and at weekends as necessary for the efficient execution of the duties of the post.
  • Prepare, collate and present evidence and attend court, committee and/or planning appeals.

Qualifications:

  • Full driving licence and access to vehicle insured for work purposes.
  • Must be EHORB registered.
  • BSc/MSc Environmental Health.
  • 2 A levels or equivalent.
  • 5 GCSEs at grade A-C (or equivalent) including English and Maths.

Experience:

  • Experience in planning consultation assessment and response on EH matters including liaison with planning colleagues, agents, consultants.
  • Experience of air quality, contaminated land, noise, light, odour and up to date knowledge of pollution related national planning policies and applicable professional guidance and standards.
  • Licensing Act Consultation responses experience.
  • Experience of PACE interviewing and Criminal Investigation Procedures and legal case file preparation.
  • Familiarity with CIVICA App would be an advantage.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of Environmental Health statutory and legal responsibilities.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Flexible on working hours may have to commence early and finish late on occasions. Requirement to work evenings and weekends at short notice.
