Edinburgh, Edinburgh, United Kingdom Kythera AI Full time

AI Designer:

  • A unique opportunity for an AI Designer to join the team developing cuttingedge AI capabilities for use in both gameplay and live interactive narrative broadcast experiences. Fulltime, minimum 6 month contract with the possibility to extend beyond. UK preferred._Would you like to join our team that's working on cuttingedge AI technologies for a new form of broadcast media?
Game engines are excellent tools for rapid production of animated entertainment.

However, when MILE (Massively Interactive Live Events) stories require new content every day, and viewers can influence what happens moment-to-moment, their capabilities for live generative narrative experiences can really shine.

With that come new challenges for game AI tools:

from directing digital extras in "living world" behaviors; to live story generation and cinematography choices; to realistic crowd flow and NPC combat.

Our middleware, Kythera AI, is the most advanced end-to-end AI solution on the market.

We provide our technology to game studios ranging from independent to AAA in a broad range of genres, support them in delivering great games with exceptional AI, and work side by side with a select few to directly shape AI in their titles.

Founded in Edinburgh, UK in 2013, and now recently backed by VC funding, we have grown to be perhaps the largest independent developer of video game AI in the world.

Our mission is to fill virtual worlds with intelligent life in games and beyond - building from our core focus in video game AI into wider industries such as simulation and interactive broadcast media, bringing the new digital worlds of the future alive.

Overview:

MILEs (Massive Interactive Live Events) are a new type of entertainment experience, somewhere in between a video game and a TV show, that incorporate some of the characteristics of each.

These experiences require new content every day, and allow viewers to interact with the experience and change what happens in a moment-to-moment fashion.

We are looking for an AI Designer to join the team that is working on a new MILE.

This MILE is based on an extremely well-known and exciting IP, and is doing cutting-edge work in dynamically generated narrative.

As part of the team, you will envision and build all of the behavior for background characters, as well as secondary behaviors that get layered on top of the narratively-driven actions of main characters.

As an AI Designer, you will take each scene or activity that is being created by narrative designers, envision all the behaviors that are needed to bridge the gap from narrative script to fully realized world, and build those behaviors.

You will work with the narrative design and cinematography teams to gather their intent and get their feedback, and with animation and art teams to get any new assets needed for your behaviors.

Content development will be done in Unreal 5, and will use Kythera's AI toolset, including new tools custom-built for this project.

As such, you will also work closely with the engineering team, providing feedback on the tools and helping to design new features, ultimately helping to shape the next generation of our tools.

The customer's team includes people located in the US's Pacific and Central time zones, as well as in Argentina (2 hours later than US Eastern time).

Kythera AI's team includes members in the Eastern US time zone, as well as members in the United Kingdom.

As such you'll need to be organized and proactive, thinking ahead on what needs to be done and coordinating with team members during the times when their work day overlaps with yours.

Experience that will aid success:

  • Proven experience developing and designing game content
  • Strong proven experience working with Unreal Engine 4 or
  • Excellent track record of selfmanagement and motivation
  • Understanding of marketing, especially in a video games environment
  • Interest or experience in video game AI
  • Experience of working with teams across multiple time zones

Why work at Kythera AI?:

We're a small but fast-growing team, meaning it's an exciting time to work with us.

We offer flexible and accommodating working hours, fully remote working, no crunch culture, and a focus on mental health with access to Safe in Our World training and resources.

Kythera AI is an equal opportunities employer and is committed to providing a safe and inclusive working environment for every member of staff.

We support the #RaiseTheGame pledge and therefore welcome and actively desire diversity among our team members, including (but not limited to) with regards to characteristics such as age, race, religion, sexual orientation, gender, or disability.

  • A brief explanation of why you are interested
  • Your CV
  • Your availability for interviews and your notice period

If we think you'll be a good fit for the role, we will aim to get back to you within 2 weeks to explain the next steps.
