Job summary

This post would benefit a post CCT in O&G doctor who wishes to develop an interest in complex obstetrics. This post will provide the opportunity for the post holder to develop skills in managing complex caesarean section (eg. Fibroids, placenta accrete spectrum), surgical management of major obstetric haemorrhage, insertion of Shirodkar sutures, abdominal cerclage, birth planning for women with high BMI and previous abdominal surgery alongside our consultant lead for complex obstetric surgery. This post would include attendance in high-risk antenatal clinics, complex elective caesarean section list, fetal medicine scan list dedicated to PAS topography and fibroid mapping with pregnancy, Complex CS MDT, gynaecology theatre developing relevant skills. In addition, a personal development session every fortnight to attend specialist clinical sessions (for example, radiology, GI or urology theatres) to develop skills relevant to the post. There would be opportunity to complete a SITM in pre-term birth prevention, supportive obstetrics, or pregnancy care. We would expect the post holder to possess skills detailed on the RCOG Training matrix ST1-7 and be competent at leading out of hours shifts as a Senior Registrar. The post holders will be required to contribute to a 48 hour EWTD full shift rota.

Main duties of the job

1) To support the inpatient service in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at New Cross Hospital.

2) Outpatient workload: duties involve antenatal/gynaecology clinics and elective operating theatre lists.

3) Research, education, audit and continuing professional development

a. To take responsibility for continuing professional education in accordance with guidelines set out by the appropriate college/faculty/professional body.

b. To initiate and participate in research and audit programmes in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.

c. To work in collaboration with colleagues in developing skills to provide new ways of working across different professions, organisations community/primary care.

4) In conjunction with colleagues, to ensure that the requirements of clinical governance are met.

5) Duties will involve labour ward and emergency gynaecology cover, antenatal/gynaecology clinics and elective operating theatre lists. The post holder will be responsible for the clinical care of Obstetric and Gynaecological patients under supervision as necessary.

6) The post holder will be responsible for the maintenance of proper case records and investigations on patients, and correspondence with General Practitioners and others as required.

About us

The Directorate has an active fetal and maternal medicine service, with a number of specialist antenatal services. There is an good case mix on Delivery Suite with a large level 3 neonatal unit.

There are excellent opportunities for this area of practice. This department is well known in the region for providing training in general gynaecological surgery.

The Directorate delivers ambulatory gynaecology services from both New Cross Hospital and Cannock Chase Hospital. These include diagnostic and therapeutic Colposcopy, diagnostic hysteroscopy, outpatient endometrial resection and endometrial ablation .

7) General elements

h. To take responsibility for your own health and safety complying with any safe working arrangements, policies and procedures which are in place.

i. To accept a duty to other staff and patients to ensure that any hazards are reported and managed appropriately.

j. To ensure that there are adequate arrangements for hospital staff involved in the care of patients to be able to contact you when necessary

k. We are committed to continued support for professional development, with study leave provided within budget.

l. The appointment(s) will be full time (fixed term) and will have an educational supervisor and a mentor.

m. Support for the new appointee will primarily be from within the Department.

Clinical audit/departmental teaching

The Trust has a supportive environment and is still small enough for personal contact with colleagues from a wide variety of disciplines.

Obstetrics and Gynaecology teaching takes place each Wednesday afternoon. There is a regular rota for teaching and the audit sessions. There is a multidisciplinary mortality and morbidity meeting held every month.

The appointment is a whole time appointment. The appointment will be to the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust.

The post holder will be managerially accountable to the Clinical Director of Obstetrics & Gynaecology.

Junior Medical Staff should ensure that only 2 members of each rota is on leave at one time. Approval for leave is at the discretion of the relevant Consultants and is department on continuity of patient care.
