Job summary

Our laboratory carries out specialised testing and provides clinical advice for renal, cardiothoracic, and stem cell transplantation, supporting NHS Teaching Hospitals in both Birmingham and Coventry. We support one of the largest solid organ transplant programmes within Europe and are also a regional centre for HLA selected platelets and Immunogenetics diagnostic testing for all hospitals within the Midlands. You will join our friendly team and play an important role by performing, analysing and interpreting a wide range of specialist scientific and technical procedures, as well as investigations relating to the issue of results for transplant patients and donors, thus impacting directly on patient care. We will provide you with an extensive induction, training, and ongoing development to support you in this role and achieve your career ambitions. The laboratory is heavily involved in career development and training, with various opportunities available for all colleagues. It would be beneficial to your application if you hold a relevant science or specialist qualification in H&I such as the BSHI Diploma or equivalent relevant experience. This is a full time, fixed term position for 12 months from 2nd September 2024, Secondments will be considered for any Internal candidates that wish to apply however please discuss with your current line manager before submitting an application.

Main duties of the job

As a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist, working in the Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics laboratory in Birmingham, your responsibilities will include: You will be required to perform, analyse, record and interpret a wide range of laboratory investigations and technical procedures relating to the issue of patient test results for solid organ and stem cell transplantation, with the support of the team. You will be responsible for the support and training of new and less experienced staff.You will be required to handle blood and tissue samples and operate a range of laboratory analysers and equipment. With appropriate training and experience, you will be required to participate in a 24/7 on-call rota, providing urgent testing and advice out-of-hours, including weekends and bank holidays as part of the laboratories 24/7 service.
