The Role


Based in the Newcastle University Centre for Cancer (NUCancer) the project is supported by an Industrial partner and jointly supervised by them and Prof.

Nicola Curtin.

It involves the evaluation of novel inhibitors of a DNA repair enzyme in a panel of cell lines with specific molecular pathologies.

They will be required to maintain 6-12 cell lines, perform colony formation cytotoxicity assays, DNA damage and repair assays, cell cycle analysis and propose and develop new assays to test hypotheses emerging from the data as the project progresses.

You will present and discuss data and plan future work with the academic and Industrial supervisory team.


You will have extensive demonstrable knowledge and experience, both theoretical and experimental, of the DNA damage response that they will be expected to use in support of the project.

You will have a PhD focussed on the DNA damage response and recent demonstrable experience in the techniques to be employed and the characterisation of novel anticancer drugs.

You should have experience of close collaborations with Industry ideally on drug discovery projects and maintaining confidentiality regarding your work.

The demonstrated ability to meticulously document experimental procedures and data consistent with industry standards is crucial.

You will have:

a high level of scientific accuracy, integrity and honesty; excellent time-management; be able to use your individual skills and insights to support the project; be co-operative and able to flexibly respond to any change in directions dictated by, e.g., data generated or new information from publications etc.

and be able to interact with other researchers as the need arises.

This is a full time, fixed term post available until Interviews will be held on Monday 23rd January 2023.

Key Accountabilities
Although working under the general guidance of an academic or Principal Investigator, the postholder will contribute ideas, including enhancements to the technical or methodological aspects of their studies, thus providing substantial 'added value'
Develop and carry out the specified project using appropriate techniques and equipment as outlined in the personal requirements
Determine appropriate methodologies for research, with advice and support where required
Begin to write, with appropriate support, proposals for individual research funding or, where funders do not permit this, contribute to the writing of collective bids
Assess research findings for the need/scope for further investigations
Contribute to the writing up of their research for publication and dissemination, either through seminar and conference presentations or through publications
Present research findings, either at conferences or through publications in reputable outlets appropriate to the discipline
May be involved in the supervision, with guidance, of final year undergraduate research projects and in providing support to postgraduate research students or Research Assistants

Will need to work with the support staff and, on occasions, with undergraduate and postgraduate students, and interact intellectually with other academic members of the Institute.

May contribute to events celebrating the public engagement of science/social sciences/humanities
Develop an awareness of University structures, policies and procedures and relevant issues in the higher education, research, social and political environment
The Research Associate will discuss experimental schedule and data on a fortnightly/ad-hoc basis with Prof Curtin and Industry partner
Presentation and discussion of data and future plans will be discussed at monthly meetings with the Industrial partner
