Job Purpose

To provide high quality effective site services to ensure a secure, safe and hygienic

environment for our staff, pupils and visitors.
Job Context

To be responsible for maintaining high standards of cleanliness, caretaking and maintenance

of equipment and the School building across two locations.
The post is required to work with tools, cleaning equipment and products which contain

chemicals, necessary protective clothing will be provided.
May be required to work outdoors

in all weather in order to ensure the school premises is safe.
The role will require daily interaction with both staff and pupils.

Main Responsibilities
Security

Locking and unlocking of buildings at predetermined times.
Opening and closing the School for evening/weekend use at times arranged by the

Headteacher.
Setting of School alarm system
Act as a designated key holder, providing response to emergency calls.
Providing overall security of the school premises including the locking of all windows.
Checking damage/security every morning on arrival at the premises.
Cleaning

Cleaning designated areas of the School to the highest possible standards (e.g. the

cleaning of shower trays / stationery storage area / outside courtyards).
Spot cleaning of spillages.
Emptying and cleaning bins.
Replenishment of paper towels, toilet rolls and other disposables.
Straightening furniture and general tidying up of designated areas.
Carry out periodic cleaning of all internal surfaces to a height of eleven feet from floor level.
Disinfect drains regularly.
General Maintenance

Carry out routine procedures or checks on ancillary equipment e.g. fire alarms /

equipment, water checks, checking batteries and areas subject to flooding.

To ensure outside areas are safe / clean, kept free from litter, debris, leaves and that there is safe access to the building during adverse weather conditions e.g.

snow.

Carry out first line repairs i.e.undertaking minor repairs (not requiring a contractor) of

a range of equipment and building not beyond the scope and capability of the

postholder and to include Basic plumbing work:
Repairing a leaking pipe, unblocking sinks, simple installation work such as plumbing a new tap, or replacing washers, etc.
Monitoring of heating system and controls
Minor repairs to school furniture and classroom equipment
Painting and decorating as appropriate
Putting up display boards (which might mean working at height)
Repairing cracked or broken plaster, making good damaged walls e.g.

following the removal of shelving or similar fittings
Glazing work, such as replacing smaller windows, re-beading or re-puttying
Ensure that all drains and gullies are free flowing and clean
Basic electrical work
Raising to the line manager, any repairs or maintenance work which is beyond the

scope of the role.
Directing contractors to the site of repair and maintenance work, and inspecting the

work of contractors where there is a requirement to sign a satisfaction note.
General porterage duties and moving of furniture requested via the School Maintenance Log.
Assisting staff with simple tasks as requested.
Preparation of Hall for functions as required.
Receive and check goods and supplies and take them to the appropriate place for
storage.
Ensure that all refuse is disposed of promptly and stored away from the main

building.
Report any defects of building, furniture, fittings and equipment to line manager.
Regularly check roofs for pooling, debris, plant growth etc.
Regularly check and clean soffits, bargeboards and external lights.
Keep all hard surfaces free of moss and weeds.

Health and Safety

Ensure that clear passage is maintained on fire escape routes.
Test fire alarms weekly. Maintain test register.
Emergency lighting test. Maintain register.
Ensure that the boiler house is tidy and that no flammable material is stored there.
Carry our Health & Safety checks on all areas on a weekly basis.
Make safe any hazards and ensure that the area is cordoned off.
Meet regularly with the Health & Safety Officer re: H&S issues and building

maintenance.

Management
Noting, monitoring and reporting any defects in the school buildings to the line

manager.
Monitor the work of contractors working on site.
Responsible for switching off of all lights and appropriate electric plug sockets.
Ensure that all lights and heating are working effectively.
Be aware of the location of all stopcocks, gas and electricity meters and read meters

as required.
Using appropriate PPE, replace and repair fluorescent tube starters and fluorescent

tubes up to a height of eleven feet.
