Senior Sister/Unit Manager ITU UHND

The Intensive Therapy Unit at University Hospital of North Durham is a general adult intensive care unit comprising of 10 beds which are used flexibly for both ITU and HDU patients.
We are looking for a dynamic and highly motivated person to join our senior team. The candidate must be a first level registered nurse, at degree level working towards masters, hold a post graduate qualification in Intensive care ( Step 3 level ), a teaching/mentoring qualification and have significant experience at working in intensive care at a senior level. The candidate should be able to demonstrate that they have worked with service improvement and has experience in change management. Good communication and leadership skills are essential for the role, as a senior nurse you will be expected to support, manage and give leadership junior members of the nursing and multidisciplinary team working within the unit. The individual must be enthusiastic, committed and demonstrate a passion for delivering the highest standard of patient care. Main duties of the job The post holder is responsible for assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation and delivery of specialised nursing care to patients within Intensive care To continuously develop and enhance knowledge and skills that will directly influence consistent standards of clinical practice and ensure the highest possible standards of evidence based care are achieved in order to promote patient focused care. As Senior Sister /Change Nurse is responsible for the development of staff, providing leadership and clinical expertise to effectively manage the ITU team Contribute to the development of specialist protocols, standards and services within the Intensive Care. Ensure safe levels of staffing and patient care are delivered in line with Intensive care standards. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes. If you are in the UK on a VISA please ensure you have no restrictions that would prevent you from taking this post Full Job Descriptions can be found in the adverts supporting documents Job description Job responsibilities The post holder will lead and manage the Intensive care team and directly assist in managing the ITU budget. They will also contribute to overall service improvement and day-to-day management of the hospital. To promote patient centred high quality evidence based care to patients on the respiratory ward, ensuring the patient is central to all aspects of treatment and care. Responsibility for ensuring the effective and efficient use of all resources within a defined clinical area, as well as controlling ward expenditure and management of the ward budget. To communicate effectively with all the multi- disciplinary teams both internal and external to the organisation. To provide clinical leadership to staff within the ITU and throughout the care group as required. To continually develop and where appropriate improve the service offered to patients, relatives and staff within the service area and contribute to care improvement initiatives across the care group. To assist and work with the General Manager, Matron and lead consultant in developing the ITU service within the trust. To act as senior nurse for ITU in the absence of the Matron during a major incident Person Specification Experience Essential- Strong Clinical knowledge of Intensive care nursing and equipment relevant to the area.
- Managerial Skills at band 6 level in Intensive care ( appraisals / sickness management)
- Good communication skills
- Evidence of undertaking audit and developing practice.
- Understanding of change management .
- Experience at undertaking route course analysis or investigations into clinical practice.
- A good level of computer skills using NHS systems
- RGN registered with the NMC
- A good working knowledge of EPR
- evidence of continuing professional and personal development .
- Service improvement skills
- Experience with Healthroster systems
- Knowledge of relevant nursing and health care policies
- RGN ( first level nurse ).
- post grad qualification in intenvise care at Step 3 level.
- Educated to degree level or working towards .
- Significant experience in a band 6 role in Intenvise care .
- Teaching / mentoring qualification.
- Ouality/ service improvement course and understanding of ICNARC.
- Management or leadership qualification
- Masters or working towards
