Research Assistant/Biocurator, Oxford-GSK Institute of Molecular and Computational Medicine

Oxford, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom University of Oxford Full time
We are looking for a

Research Assistant to join Professor Laura Parkkinen's research group, which includes diverse expertise including next-generation neuropathology, proteomics/transcriptomics and computational biology.

This post provides an opportunity to join the newly established multidisciplinary Oxford-GSK Institute of Molecular and Computational Medicine (IMCM) operating within Nuffield Department of Medicine (NDM) in collaboration with Nuffield Department of Clinical Neuroscience (NDCN), Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, Department of Psychiatry and Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics (DPAG).

Working closely with the Parkkinen Lab members and OBB team and data manager, you will help with modernising the sample resource, to produce a collection of aliquots from the original samples, as well as re-mapping the storage areas containing these samples.

You will help tie together the sample information with existing clinical and pathological data, to help the OBB team determine the current availability for biosamples, as well as to identify any gaps in data.

In addition, you will take part in a re-classification project to characterise each of the OPTIMA cases with up-to-date methodology, preparing new diagnostic slides to support detailed neuropathological diagnosis.

You will form an integral part of the team of researchers making use of these samples in a multi-disciplinary research project; preparing and dispatching samples to collaborators, performing quality control measures on samples, and compiling some research data pertaining to the samples.

It is essential that you hold a BSc degree in Neuroscience, Molecular Biology, Genetics/Genomics or related areas, and have basic laboratory experience including laboratory safety principles, pipetting skills and following standard operating procedures.

You will have excellent communication skills, including the ability to present research results in weekly lab meetings, and at departmental/external meetings, and meticulous attention to detail and good record-keeping.

You will also have experience in general molecular biology techniques (e.g. with microtomy, immunohistochemistry, tissue and nucleic acid extraction).
