Job Purpose

Media Operations is at the heart of BBC News's creative technical and production capability. We are a team of more than 700 people combining Newsgathering Operations and Output Operations responsible for gathering all the news on location across all platforms, as well as all news studios at NBH and Millbank in London.

We are a unified audiences first, cross-platform team. Working hand-in-hand with Newsgathering and News Output we will strive to deliver news more efficiently and effectively to audiences both present and future by using newer technologies and simplified workflows to become an even more inspiring, creative and rewarding place to work.

Media Operations provides BBC news with TV studio staff across London. Its services include BBC Arabic, BBC Persian, BBC New Languages and Millbank. The operation also covers BBC 1 One O clock, Six O clock and Ten O clock bulletins, BBC News Channel, BBC London, as well as programmes such as Newsnight, Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Newscast, Today and a variety of other news and current affairs programmes. The services are multi-media in operation and are run by teams working in a live studio environment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Main Responsibilities

We support the best possible output on all platforms, built on a strong understanding of audience needs and integrated with production teams. Our team is made up of high-end craft, multi-skilled staff. A requirement for high quality output is key to the BBC's reputation at home and abroad.

We work in all of the technical areas of BBC News output which includesGallery operations: lighting, technical coordination,sound mixing, vision mixing and Studio Floor operations: camera operations and floor management.

We are currently looking fora Multi-Skilled Technical Operatorwho is a sound specialist and hasexcellent sound mixing skills and ideally experience of working on live TV programmes.
You will work on a rota pattern which includes weekends, public holidaysand night working.

Are you the right candidate?

To be successful for this role, you will need
  • A passion for producing excellent quality sound and a background and thorough knowledge of sound systems as well as being fully competent in broadcast sound is essential.
  • Experience of working in a live news broadcast environmentis desirable for this role.
  • You will have excellent organisational and time management skills, excellent IT skills and the ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
  • You will need to have a broad knowledge of national and international news and current affairs; a good understanding of the journalistic and production aims of the output as well as the ability to facilitate editorial and policy decisions based upon a clear understanding of the BBC's news agenda.
  • An awareness of BBC policy oncurrent Health and Safety regulations and knowledge of news production computer systems is also required.
Essential forSound Mixing:
  • Experience in mixing sound ideally in a Live TV or radio environment
  • Thorough knowledge and recent regular experience of using broadcast sound desks, ideally the Calrec Brio or Artemis desks
  • An excellent knowledge in the operation and use of radio microphones and in ear monitoring and their associated transmitters and receivers together with an awareness of licensing and frequency allocation
  • The ability to work quickly and problem solve under pressure to tight deadlines
  • Understanding of the opportunities and challenges of working in a team and supporting each other with sharing,prioritising and delegating tasks
Interview process

Interviews are likely to take place on 3rd, 4th and 6th June in London Broadcasting House. They will be a blend of value bsaed questions and a technical assessment.
