Reporting to the Lead Data Engineer – Re & ILS

London with Hybrid working

Hiscox is seeking a strong and dynamic Data Engineer with Data Science experience to join our Re & ILS Technology Team. This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of a transformation program, working with data architects and contributing to the cloud-based data analytics platform, in support of our new data strategy.

You will be working with stakeholders, translating their business requirements into sustainable technical solutions and helping them understand how technology can enable business objectives. You will help architect and build new data solutions and initial PoCs using SaaS and PaaS-based services on Azure. While Microsoft PaaS data services are often our starting point, knowledge and experience of non-Microsoft PaaS services is welcomed and encouraged, including hosted services on other Cloud providers.

Required skills:

  • Strong knowledge of our core languages for data engineering – Python , SQL and Terraform .
  • A good understanding of CI/CD and experience with one of the CI/CD tools – Azure DevOps, GitLab or Jenkins.
  • Strong knowledge of machine learning algorithms, statistical techniques, and data analysis.
  • Working knowledge of Data Science Platforms like Dataiku.
  • A robust understanding of core data engineering topics – ETL vs ELT, structured and unstructured data, data quality and data governance.
  • A good understanding of traditional data warehousing and modern warehousing techniques and services.
  • Ability to contribute to all aspects of a solution – design, infrastructure, development, testing and maintenance.

Key areas of work:

  • Working with business stakeholders to understand high value business problems that can be solved through the application of data processing and analytical systems.
  • Helping to design, build and support a new cloud-based analytics platform for the business.
  • Being a core and professional member of the new Data Engineering Team
  • Understand business requirements and help refine into development tasks and estimate their complexity.
  • Research, evaluate and adopt new technologies with a right tool for the job mentality.
  • Focus on both speed of delivery and quality, with suitable pragmatism – ensuring your solutions are always appropriate and not too complex or over-engineered.
  • Quick progression of projects from proof-of-concept to post-production stage
  • Communication and presentation of ideas to colleagues in all parts of the wider tech team
  • Participating in code reviews for the Data Engineering Team

Our technology

We are building a new cloud data platform to realise value from our data. That platform is based on Snowflake , Azure Data Factory for ELT and Prefect for orchestration all running on Microsoft Azure . Most platform code will be written in SQL or Python.

We prepare data for use by analysts working with a variety of tools – Tableau , PowerBI , Dataiku , Python, R and even Excel.

We take a DevOps approach and strive for continuous integration / continuous deployment. We use Azure Pipelines to deploy our code. We deploy infrastructure the same way using Terraform and Docker .

We are using Azure OpenAI for document comparison.

Our technology landscape is not fixed. Our engineering teams drive the technology we adopt.
