Liverpool, Liverpool, United Kingdom Alternative Futures Group Full time
Support Worker, 39 hours per week, Permanent in Tuebrook

Being a Support Worker at AFG is a hugely rewarding role and could be your first step on a long and happy career in Health & Social Care.

So, what does a Support Worker do?

We have a vision to create a world where people control their lives. Here at AFG, we pride ourselves on helping the people we support to design, develop and 'own' the support they receive by planning this with them; we support people to make informed choices and increase their own independence; and we support people to maintain their own health, wellbeing and living environment. These principles are really important to us.

Our Support Workers work in a variety of settings including community-based services (often supporting people in their own homes) to our Treatment & Recovery Centres.

One thing that is common across all of our services is a focus on personalised support and tailoring our services to the needs and aspirations of the people we support with a diverse range of care needs (including Learning Disabilities, Physical Disabilities, Mental Health Concerns, Complex Care, Substance Misuse issues to name a few).

We value the people that work with us...

At AFG we recognise the contribution and value that our staff make. We would not be able to provide the life changing support that we do without people like you In return for your contribution we will support you throughout your career and we provide a wide range of employee benefits, career development (including opportunities to undertake vocational qualifications) and lifestyle support services to ensure that you too feel supported, fulfilled and valued from day one of your employment with us.

About you...

There are a few things that we look for in all of our support workers; we would need you to...

  • be a good communicator (verbally and in writing)
  • be patient, confident and enthusiastic about caring for others
  • be able to use your own initiative
  • be able to work as part of a team
  • have flexibility to work a varied shift pattern to provide 24-hour support
  • share our AFG values

We don't ask for any other relevant training or a previous career in care as full training will be provided – you just need a willingness to learn and develop.

Your pay - our Support Workers receive a rate of £ per hour for all worked hours. Once you are successful for a role with us, full details of your pay will be included in your written offer.

As a 'values based' employer, the people that work for us genuinely care about the people they support, and we are seeking likeminded people to join our AFG family. If you are passionate about caring for others and have a real desire to make a positive difference to the lives of the people we support then we would love to hear from you.

More about this
We asked the Team Leader to tell us more about this role and the amazing person that we need to work here.

Where is this vacancy based?

This vacancy is based in Tuebrook, Liverpool.

Who do you support?
We support 3 gentlemen currently, all with learning disabilities.

Two gentlemen are in their 60s and also have hearing impairments.

We have a gentlemen who is in his 30s for which this vacancy is aimed towards.

He is active, is out and about every day.

He absolutely loves football, enjoys playing football and watching football, regardless of whether it is the team that he supports.

He enjoys watching Youtube and his favourite soap opera is Eastenders which he watches every week.

Where do they live?
The property is an old style terraced house with 3 floors. We have a small front yard and a back paved garden/yard.

What would a typical shift be like?
At the start of a day shift the three gentlemen get up at various times.

Some support with personal care is required, more in the way of prompts to shower/bathe, brush teeth etc.

Support with breakfast which can vary depending on the choice of breakfast.

The gentlemen are able to make cereal etc but for a breakfast that requires cooking then support will be required.

There will be 1:1 time for the gentlemen and for this vacancy the 1:1 hours are for the majority of the shift; to support with out and about activities, leisure and time within the house, etc.

Late afternoon is quite mellow, support to make tea and the individual will watch the television and/or Youtube; general quiet time.

The evening is more of the same, settled and sat together in the living room enjoying the television before the waking night staff arrive at 10pm.

What activities do the people that we support at this property like to do?
One our gents really enjoys football, Liverpool FC in particular but in general just anything football.

He likes to go and play football, watches live mens and female football and enjoys watching football on the tv, whether that be at home or down the pub on big sporting events.

A big favourite is also Eastenders and watching YouTube videos on various things from jet washing to unblocking drains.

Our two older gents enjoy book shops and charity shops, time out at seaside resorts, a weekly visit to the favourite pub for dinner before returning to chill out with time in their rooms, watching old tv series and classic films.

One particular gentlemen really loves his garden area, where he will plant his flowers and even grows some of his own vegetables.

He enjoys tending to his garden, ensuring the flowers are fed and watered etc and look neat and tidy.

Are there any skills or interests that a candidate could have that would be great to use to support this service?
A keen interest in Football and particularly Liverpool FC but if not Liverpool, just a keen interest in everything football.

Getting out and about accessing the local and wider community, visiting the city centre, visits to the gym and even having a kick about.

What is the team here or is it lone-working?
The team is set up to support three gentlemen, but this particular vacancy is aimed towards our gentlemen in his 30s.

During the day, the hours provided will be 1:1 to go out and undertake social activities such as the gym, trips in to town etc.

Late afternoon and early evenings will be team based with an experienced team who will help transition and to settle in.

The evenings are lone working, by means of a sleep in but with a team leader on call at all times.

What are your shift patterns
Shift patterns can vary. The position is 39 hours which we will rota on over a 7-day week but will roughly be anything from 10:00 to 20:00 or shorter 7 hour shifts over several days.

We hope this has given you more insight into this role and we hope to see your application soon.

Please note our Support Workers are contracted by area therefore flexibility is essential to work in other services where required.
