Our plans for ourEye Hospital in Sunderland are taking shape and will be our new home, with work due to start later this year.

The new hospital means Sunderland will remain home to the regions only dedicated standalone eye hospital.

It will strengthen our excellent reputation across the NHS, both regionally and nationally as a centre of excellence for ophthalmology care.

As one of the few specialist eye hospitals in the country, research and using developing technology is a key part of our work.

The post will work closely with the Directorate Manager, Clinical Director, Matron and wider senior management team and support the day to day operational management of the team including the Directorates governance programme, operational priorities, transformation projects as well as business performance.

The main duties of the role include supporting the Directorate Manager in the day-to-day operational management of the Directorate, ensuring that resources are deployed effectively and efficiently.

As part of this there will be the opportunity to become involved and lead on delivery of key projects within the Directorate that enhance service delivery and overall improve the quality of patient care.

We are a friendly and welcoming Directorate comprising 287 staff from a diverse set of professional backgrounds working across a range of ophthalmic subspecialties, providing a wealth of opportunities for staff development and engagement, both within the Directorate and wider Surgical Division.

The ideal candidate will be educated to degree level or equivalent and be able to evidence management training/experience to post graduate level.

This post is offered on a full time, fixed term basis until 30th April 2026 or a secondment. Part time candidates are also welcome.

To support the Directorate Manager in the day-to-day operational management of the directorate, ensuring that resources are deployed effectively and efficiently across the site.

To ensure that key directorate performance targets for activity, expenditure, waiting times, waiting lists, complaints and other quality measures are met.

To work in partnership with key managers/staff within and out with the Directorate to ensure that quality patient services are provided.

Evidence of other specialist management training to post graduate level/equivalent experience

Project Management experience
Leadership Training

Ability to present complex data
Proven record of pro-active performance
Well-developed IT skills to manage and report on complex performance management information systems
Ability to analyse complex financial and clinical data sets

Significant experience at a managerial level including responsibility for planning and budgetary control for a directorate or service
Experience of HR management, budgetary management, performance and information management and of planning and developing strategy
Committed to providing quality services to patients
