Job description


The Paediatric Allergy Group at King's College London and Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust is one of the biggest and most innovative research centres for children's allergies in the world, headed by Professor Gideon Lack.

The Paediatric Allergy Group hosts a portfolio of non-commercial and commercial studies with a focus in food allergy diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.


The Dietitian will have responsibility for all dietary aspects of care of a designated case load of paediatric study participants and will carry out the dietetic care as laid out within the study schedule of events.

Activities will include face-to-face clinical assessments and dietary advice; preparing oral food challenges; food diary assessments; telephone consultations and recording of clinical assessments in study source documents and case report forms.

Through this role the Dietitian will have the opportunity to learn from the NHS Paediatric Allergy Dietitians in an out-patient setting at St Thomas' Hospital, to develop their knowledge and clinical skills in paediatric allergy and enhance the dietetic care provided to study participants.

This post will be offered on an 6 month fixed-term contract

This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent

Key responsibilities

  • Provide study participants' parents and other team members with professional dietary advice on issues affecting the care of children taking part in the clinical trials
  • Provide other Paediatric Allergy research team members with guidance and training regarding common paediatric dietary issues, including growth monitoring/anthropometry
  • Develop and prepare appropriate childfriendly foods for oral challenges.
  • Support study staff with carrying out oral food challenges for a range of allergy studies in children aged 018 years of age.
  • Monitor and record allergenic food consumption using designated food frequency questionnaires.
  • Complete dietary assessments using designated tools e.g. 37 day food diaries
  • Record appropriate dietary information onto research source documents and case report forms.
  • Monitor study participants' dietary habits and provide facetoface and telephonic dietary education.
  • Enter and manage data using knowledge of Windowsbased software, including MS Word, Excel, Outlook and Access.
  • Analyse dietary intake using a standard computer programme (e.g. Dietplan).
  • In cooperation with the research team develop and update dietary protocols, policies, and procedures for the clinical research unit and both current and future studies as required and ensure compliance with these.
  • In cooperation with the research team, gather, analyse, and write up dietary research data for study publications.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

  • Degree in Nutrition/Dietetics or equivalent, supported with Current Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration and Evidence of CPD through portfolio maintenance.
  • Previous experience in a research post or involvement in a dietary intervention study.
  • Proficiency in using nutritional analysis software (e.g. Dietplan)
  • Member of the British Dietetic Association and evidence of post registration training in paediatrics and/or food allergy.
  • Previous dietetics experience.
  • Experience of confidently liaising with colleagues and other relevant departments/agencies and communicate with study participants and families in an empathetic and accessible manner.
  • Strong numerative skills, accurate with a keen eye for detail.
  • Experience of working independently, use own initiative and problem solve and manage difficult situations calmly and objectively.
