Edinburgh, Edinburgh, United Kingdom Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society Full time

Closing date 10:00 Friday 24 May 2024

Interview date:
Monday 3 June 2024

Start date:

ASAP

End date:
Friday 27 September 2024

Background:

The idea at the heart of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe is simple: anyone with a desire to perform and a venue willing to host them is welcome.

No individual or committee determines who can or cannot perform at the Fringe.

It all began in 1947 with eight companies - six of them from Scotland - taking a risk, turning up uninvited and performing on the 'fringe' of the inaugural Edinburgh International Festival.

Over 75 years later, the Fringe has grown to become one of the greatest platforms for creative freedom in the world, second only to the Olympics in terms of global ticketed events.

In 2023, 3,553 shows took place in 288 venues across Edinburgh.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society was founded by artists to nurture and uphold the Fringe's values of inclusivity, experimentation and imagination.

We exist to support, advise and encourage everyone who wants to participate in the Fringe, provide information and assistance to audiences, and celebrate the Fringe and what it stands for all over the world.

Purpose of the role:

This role will support the Artist Support team who provide guidance to artists, performing companies, venues, producers, and other stakeholders participating in the Fringe.

The successful applicant will provide administrative assistance to a wide variety of projects with particular focus on the services delivered directly to Fringe artists.

A significant portion of the contract will be dedicated to the Fringe Society's music licensing arrangement with PPL PRS ltd.

Role and responsibilities:

  • General administrative support for the Artist Support team and wider Artist Services department.
  • Administrating the provision of letters of support for visa purposed international Fringe artists.
  • Supporting general project work such as the distribution of sellout laurels and the researching and confirmation of artist discounts from local businesses.

Music licensing

  • Data entry and other administrative tasks relating to the processing of PPL PRS declaration forms submitted by Fringe artists in line with the Fringe Society's bespoke blanket music licensing arrangement with PPL PRS ltd.
  • Providing regular reports to the Artist Support and Projects Manager, Fringe venues and PPL PRS Ltd detailing music licensing updates.
  • Collating information to allow for the processing of music licensing charges to Fringe Box Office payouts.
  • Collating and processing venue background music licenses.

Person specification:

Essential

  • Excellent administrator with strong time management skills and a keen attention to detail.
  • The ability to prioritise competing tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a proven ability to confidently negotiate complex situations sensitively.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (particularly Microsoft Excel) and strong general IT skills.

Desirable

  • Previous experience of ticketing, box office procedures and processes, or equivalent datafocussed work.
  • Knowledge and experience of working and/or performing at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe or in the arts sector.
  • Understanding of the Fringe Society and its role in the wider festival.
  • Knowledge of PPL and PRS music licensing.

Rate of pay and hours of work:
The rate of pay for this post is £12.00 per hour (35 hours).

Working hours will be 10:00 - 18:00, five days a week between Monday - Friday with a daily one
- hour unpaid lunch break. Occasional weekend work may be requested at busy points around August but this would be planned in advance with compensatory days off granted.

The Fringe have identified six pillars of commitment around the sustainable delivery of their work, are active members of the Festivals Edinburgh Sustainability Working group and include climate action as one of the headline targets in the Fringe development goals.

As part of the commitments of this work, all Fringe staff members are expected to assist with the Fringe Society's environmental goals and consider these in all elements of your work.

Application deadline: 24th May, 2024
