We are seeking a trainee papermaker to join our team.

This will allow us to increase our production capacity and to pass on and preserve the skills and knowledge of this critically endangered craft.


This is a unique opportunity to learn a very rare and satisfying craft and join us at an exciting moment in our history as we continue to expand.


The Role
As a Trainee papermaker at the Paper Foundation you will be taught the craft of papermaking by hand.

The majority of the training will be provided in house and many of the skills will be picked up on the job.

External training will be provided where possible and relevant.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist experienced papermakers in all stages of the papermaking process, including preparing the pulp, forming sheets, pressing, drying, and finishing.
  • Learn and master traditional handpapermaking techniques under the guidance of skilled craftsmen.
  • Operate and maintain tools and equipment used in papermaking, ensuring their cleanliness and proper functioning.
  • Support general workshop activities, such as material handling, inventory management, and workspace organization.
  • Contribute to a safe and healthy work environment by following established safety guidelines and procedures.


You will also have the opportunity to experience what goes into running a small business from product development through to managing customer relationships.


Who we are looking for:


Whilst no prior experience of papermaking is required, experience working in a workshop environment is highly desirable and a proven ability to work with your hands is essential.

An interest in papermaking or related crafts is also beneficial.

You will also have:

  • A proven ability to work independently and be comfortable working closely with others in a small team.
  • Comfortable working in a cold workshop environment. Papermaking involves working with water and wet materials.
  • Physically fit and able to perform repetitive physical tasks, lift heavy objects, and stand for extended periods.
  • Detailoriented with a keen eye for quality. The ability to maintain consistency and produce precise work is essential.
  • Excellent communication skills and a positive attitude towards learning and constructive feedback.
