Job Summary
The Teaching Assistant at our alternative provision will support the educational, personal, and social development of young people.

The role involves assisting the lead staff in delivering educational programs, facilitating activities, delivering lessons to small groups, and providing individualized support to students.

The goal is to create a positive and inclusive learning environment that meets the diverse needs of our participants.

Key Responsibilities

Support Educational Programs:

  • Assist in the planning and delivery of educational activities, including arts & crafts, baking, business enterprise skills, and entrepreneurial projects.
  • Help set up materials and equipment for lessons and activities.
  • Support lead staff in delivering multisports activities such as football, boxing, and cricket.

Delivering Lessons:

  • Plan and deliver lessons to small groups of 3 to 4 learners, tailored to their individual needs and learning styles.
  • Create engaging and interactive lesson plans to facilitate active learning and participation.
  • Monitor and assess the progress of small groups, providing feedback to lead staff and adjusting instruction as necessary.

Individualised Student Support:

  • Provide oneonone support to students who need additional help, ensuring they understand and engage with the material.
  • Assist with differentiated instruction to meet the varying needs of students.
  • Monitor and support students' progress, providing feedback to lead staff.

Classroom and Activity Management:

  • Help maintain a safe, organised, and stimulating learning environment.
  • Supervise students during activities, ensuring their safety and encouraging positive behaviour.
  • Assist in managing classroom behaviour and implementing behaviour management strategies.

Mentoring and Personal Development:

  • Support the mentoring program by providing guidance and encouragement to students.
  • Help students set personal and academic goals, and work towards achieving them.
  • Provide emotional support and encouragement to build students' selfesteem and confidence.

Administrative Duties:

  • Assist in maintaining accurate records of student attendance, progress, and activities.
  • Help prepare and organise resources and materials for activities and lessons.
  • Support the lead staff with administrative tasks as needed.

Communication and Collaboration:

  • Communicate effectively with lead staff, volunteers, students, and parents.
  • Participate in staff meetings and contribute to discussions about program development and student progress.
  • Work collaboratively with other staff members and volunteers to ensure a cohesive and supportive environment.

Extracurricular Activities:

  • Assist in organising and supervising extracurricular activities, including pool, table tennis, esports, and other recreational activities.
  • Encourage student participation and foster a sense of community and belonging.

Professional Development:

  • Participate in training and professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Stay informed about best practices in education and youth work.

Qualifications and Skills:

Education: A minimum of a high school education or equivalent. A qualification in English & Maths is desirable.

Experience: Previous experience working with young people, particularly in an educational or youth work setting, is preferred.

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Patience, empathy, and the ability to relate to young people.
  • Organisational skills and the ability to multitask.
