Job summary

The appointed candidate will join our existing PEM Consultant and the team of general ED Consultants in caring for the unwell and injured paediatric population of the area.

This new post is an additional post, reflecting the enhanced investment the Trust is making in the Paediatric Emergency Department. This post expands the Consultant body in recognition of the need for additional senior support for this part of the department.

The successful candidate will provide general clinical Children's ED sessions and senior input into patient care, ensuring appropriate discharge and hospital admission, along with management and leadership responsibilities expected of Consultants in the specialty. They will supervise junior doctors and advanced care practitioners in the Children's ED.

The Children's Emergency Department sits alongside the main department and has its own team of dedicated paediatric nurses 24/7. We enjoy good links and great working relationships with the Paediatric Assessment Unit and the Paediatric services within the hospital. In the last two years we have refurbished our Paediatric resuscitation room and have moved into a newly refurbished, appropriately sized Children's Emergency Department, complete with two assessment rooms, five cubicles, and well-maintained children's and separate teens' waiting areas. We have CAMHS team presence on site seven days a week, as well as dedicated Children's Safeguarding Nurses for the Emergency Department.

There will a proportionate amount of evening and weekend work, in keeping with EM posts nationwide (proportionate weekday late shift work and 1 in 5 weekends WTE)o Provision for cover of colleague's annual leave in accordance with the Leave policy

FRCEM and CCT in Emergency Medicine with Subspecialty Paediatric Emergency Medicine or equivalent within 6 months of interview/ FRCPCH and CCT in Paediatrics or equivalent within 6 months of interview ATLS or ETC to provider status, APLS to provider status Full registration with a licence to practice with the GMC

Clinical experience

Essential

Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in Emergency Medicine or Paediatrics

Desirable

If from a Paediatric training background, experience in Paediatric Emergency Medicine through grid training or equivalent
