Sitting within a beautiful and secure site, the Defence Academy hosts 2 lakes and is surrounded by acres of scenic woodland.

The Academy trains the future commanders and staff officers of all three UK Armed Services and those from many countries around the world.

The Hobson Library is one of the biggest Defence libraries in Europe.

Based in the Joint Services Command Staff College at the Defence Academy of the UK, we are looking for an enthusiastic Library Assistant to join our small team.


The Assistant Librarian is a professional who supports the Head of Library Services in the planning and delivery of library and information services to staff, students and external customers of the JSCSC and of the Defence Academy as a whole.

Responsibilities of the role

  • Assist in the planning and delivery of the library and information service to ensure a consistently high standard of service to our customers.
  • Enquiry Desk support for staff and students, including guidance in using the Library catalogue, electronic resources and library equipment.
  • Enable staff, students and external Library members to become selfsufficient in their informationseeking abilities.
  • Contribute to student induction programmes, guides, tours, displays and other activities.
  • Contribute to the daytoday tasks in the library, such as shelving and weeding.
  • Supervise other members of staff on the Enquiry Desk and on project work, reporting to your Team Leader.
  • Assist with the identification, planning and implementation of new developments in bibliographic and systems services operations, particularly in the exploration technology and innovation.
  • Cataloguing, classification and processing of the library collection.
  • Assist with the daytoday management and development of the Library Management System (LMS).
  • Assist with the management and evaluation of subscription and digital resources.
  • Lead on or participate in projects and cross team working groups, as appropriate.
  • As required by the Head of Library Services, you will be expected to carry out any other reasonable duties for which you are trained and competent and which fall within the general scope of the post and grade.

What you need to do the job

  • CILIP accredited degree in librarianship or information science.
  • Experience of working in an academic or research library/information service.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and remain flexible.
  • Good planning and organisational skills.
  • A commitment to highquality customer service.
  • Knowledge of the developing role of online, digital and social media in educational organisations.
