Role Overview

To operate within the technical Centre of Excellence of the company, that provides technical direction, support, and oversight to all projects undertaken by the business. The Centre of Excellence is formed of Lead Mechanical, Lead Electrical, Lead Controls engineers, and the overseeing Head of Design. The Centre of Excellence reports to the Technical Director and performs the role of technical authority for the business. The core activities of the Lead Mechanical Engineer role are design reviews, technical guidance, engineering problem solving, and guiding projects at any stage in their development through complex technical challenges.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

Technical Expertise

The successful candidate will have proven experience working on multi-discipline projects with strong knowledge of design development, general construction processes, and statutory requirements. Detailed knowledge and experience in the design of large scale heating and cooling distribution systems, including LTHW, CHW, MTHW, and steam networks, and consumer plant room installations. Detailed knowledge and experience in the design of energy centre plant, including heat pumps, CHPs, boilers, steam generators, pumps, and thermal storage. Detailed knowledge and experience in the design of new and retrofit energy centre systems, including ventilation, pressurisation, safety systems, building services, and controls. A working knowledge of Health Technical Memoranda (HTM) publications and the aspects pertaining to centralised heating, electrical power, and domestic hot water systems. Detailed knowledge and experience in multi-disciplinary coordination on topics such a Low Voltage and High Voltage electrical distribution systems, energy centre control systems, structural engineering, architecture, and process safety. Experience in operating in a technical-commercial project environment where approaches and decision making are to be balanced with cost, time, and contractual requirements. Detailed knowledge and experience in setting out, managing, and utilising specialist studies and analyses as part of design development and due-diligence, including acoustic modelling, dispersion modelling, structural core sampling, temporary metering, process safety studies, and other bespoke engineering activities.

Activities

Oversight of the company's mechanical engineering activities throughout the UK. Lead the approach to solving all mechanical engineering challenges, non-conformities, and corrective activities, assisting teams to plan clear routes forward. Reporting and management of the company mechanical engineering activities to the Head of Design and Technical Director. Development, review, and upkeep of the company mechanical engineering resources, standards, specifications, literature, and other supporting materials. Development of the company mechanical design management tools, templates, processes, and quality controls. Representation of the mechanical design function in the undertaking of internal ISO audits. End to end oversight of the development of mechanical designs throughout the project portfolio. Detailed review of designs from concept stage through detailed design, construction stage design, and through final commissioning and handover. Undertaking multi-disciplinary design reviews and cross-discipline coordination with project teams and other technical authorities to identify issues, resolve challenges, and ensure the compliance and robustness of the delivered designs. Undertaking aspects of concept and detailed mechanical design for projects, with support from adjacent disciplines, where required from time-to-time to assist resourcing and cover short-term gaps in project mobilisation. Preparing and delivering client presentations and decision briefings at project management and project steering group level to progress key topics. Discussion and solving of complex problems with clients, design team, suppliers and sub-contractors. Analysis and interpretation of data and information. Ensuring that designs can be implemented within live operational sites with minimum disruption. Manage projects using engineering principles and techniques. Make recommendations in relation to project team workload, expertise, support requirements and recruitment considerations. Consideration of the implications of issues such as cost, safety, and time constraints. Monitor and witness commissioning of plant and systems. Creation of reports and documentation. Keeping up to date with the latest regulations and guidance. Attending client sites at various locations throughout the UK.

Projects

The Lead Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for all mechanical matters in relation to technical compliance and completeness across the business project portfolio for healthcare, university, and industrial clients. Project content includes: New build and retrofit energy centres for decarbonisation and industrial energy projects. Core plant design including air and ground source heat pumps, boilers, CHPs, chillers, thermal stores, flues, and other technologies as required. Heating and chilled water distribution systems, plant rooms, and all supporting auxiliary systems. LV & HV works and upgrades, including substations, switchboards, distribution boards, and associated rooms. Energy centre and distributed system controls. Auxiliary energy and carbon reduction measures, including solar PV installation, BMS optimisation, BMS dilapidation repair, AHU fan retrofits, LED lighting retrofits, cavity wall insulation, window replacements, external wall insulation installation, façade replacements.

Knowledge, Skills, Education & Experience

MSc or MEng Mechanical Engineering CEng Status and/or engaged on a programme of Continual Professional Development. Direct experience within design, including self-delivery, the use of design consultants, and the use of installation subcontractors. 10+ years experience ideally within mechanical engineer, preferably with direct experience in energy performance contracts, decarbonisation projects, or other similar challenging field. Experience working with major plant such as boilers, chillers, heat pumps, air handling plant, steam and heating systems, pumps, controls, LV/HV systems, CHP, and detailed auxiliary systems. A detailed working knowledge of industry publications and standards such as BS ENs, CIBSE, HTMs, HBNs, IGEM, Building Regulations, and ACOPs. Ability to coach less experienced engineers and project teams. Ability to act as a critical thinker, able to identify a problem, define it, determine the root cause, identify possible solutions and implement or escalate as required Experience working equally well independently as well as part of a team Excellent communications skills, both written and spoken. Proficient in Microsoft Office. Proficiency in Excel, Word and PowerPoint to analyse data, present findings, analyse data, reports and graph presentation to a high level of accuracy and with attention to detail. Ability to build strong, effective working relationships at all levels of seniority Ability to influence decision making within their stakeholders Takes a balanced technical, commercial, and practical approach to providing technical solutions. Resilient and self-reliant with the ability to work in a self-sufficient manner, often uses own initiative. Excellent organisation/time management skills to manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively.
