Position Details
College of Arts and Law

Location:
University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK

As this vacancy has limited funding the maximum salary that can be offered is Grade 7, salary £34,980

Part Time (15 hours per week)

Fixed Term contract up to April 2025

Closing date: 27th March 2024

Background
Since the 2005 Gambling Act came into effect, concern about gambling harm has grown in the UK.

In response, many experts call for a whole-systems, public health (PH) approach, involving improved laws and regulations to reduce harms.

However, we currently lack systematic evidence on the effectiveness of such legal and regulatory interventions, including in terms of their impacts on health inequalities.

In particular, we lack evidence on the effects (including the unintended effects) of laws and regulations intended to reduce harms associated with gambling.

We have been awarded a National Institute for Health and Care Research grant, starting from the 1st May 2024, to further explore some of these unknowns.

Role Summary

The post holder will be reasonable for working on the first work package (WP) of the project (May 2024, for 12 moths).

WP1 To describe the effects of interventional public health laws and regulations intended to reduce harms associated with gambling

The postholder will undertake a systematic review of literature examining the effects (including the unintended effects) of laws and regulations intended to reduce harms associated with gambling.

The literature reviewed will come from multiple disciplines, including law, socio-legal studies, public health, addiction studies, psychology, economics, sociology, and social policy.

The literature reviewed will examine, in part, the impacts of gambling laws on health inequalities, to help us better understand which sub-groups benefit most from which types of legal interventions and why.

The postholder will work on the systematic review with a research fellow trained in public health, under the supervision of the Co-Principal Investigator (based in Birmingham Law School).

Work will mainly involve gathering and reviewing literature according to the systematic review protocol developed by the research team.

Main Duties

The responsibilities will include:

  • Gathering and reviewing evidence, from a range of disciplines including law, on the effects of interventional public health laws and regulations intended to reduce harms associated with gambling, using the systematic review protocol developed by the research team
  • Working with others to analyse and interpret the results of the evidence review
  • Working with others to presenting the results of the review to nonacademic partners (including experts with direct personal experience of gambling harm, charities working on gambling harm, and health organisations).

  • Disseminating research findings for publication, research seminars etc
  • Undertaking administration arising from the research
  • Contributing to relevant School and University researchrelated activities and researchrelated administration
  • Providing guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research
  • Contributing to writing bids for further research funding
  • Working with others to resolve problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
  • Promoting equality and acting as a role model in fostering an inclusive working culture.
  • Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods

Person Specification

  • A strong interest in the component parts of the research topic (public health law; health inequalities; gambling harm)
  • A strong desire to work as part of an ambitious interdisciplinary team, reviewing evidence from a range of fields
  • A strong interest in working collaboratively with nonacademic partners as experts
  • Experience of conducting systematic reviews, under supervision
  • Ability and willingness to work under supervision and also independently, depending on the stage of the systematic review
  • High level analytical capability
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly, including to nonacademic partners and specialists in other disciplines.
  • Ability to contribute to research publications, in law and in public health
  • Excellent time management and ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
  • Ability to contribute to the planning and organising of the work package
  • Ability to coordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
