London, Greater London, United Kingdom LGC Group Full time
Company Description

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) is funded by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC).

We work in partnership with the NHS, universities, local government, other research funders, patients, and the public.

The NIHR funds, enables, and delivers world-leading health and social care research that improves people's health and wellbeing and promotes economic growth.

We are also a major funder of applied health research in low
- and middle-income countries.

DHSC contracts directly with a number of NHS Trusts, universities and life science organisations that together host our two coordinating centres:

  • NIHR Coordinating Centre (NIHRCC), hosted by Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, the University of Southampton, and LGC.
  • Clinical Research Network Coordinating Centre (CRNCC), hosted by a consortium of the University of Leeds and Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.
These two coordinating centres share operational responsibility for the NIHR.

Their work is directed by DHSC's Chief Scientific Adviser and by the Director and Senior Management Team of DHSC's Science Research and Evidence Directorate.

  • Work with other cancer research funders, such as Cancer Research UK (who, amongst other activities, cofund with NIHR the Experimental Cancer Medicine Centres), to coordinate and join up research funding across the landscape.
  • Contribute to the responses to Parliamentary Questions and Ministerial Briefings on issues relating to cancer research, often at short notice.
  • Represent NIHR at meetings with external stakeholders in the cancer research field, including for interaction with Cancer Research UK and the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI), and with the Joint Steering Board of the Tessa Jowell Brain Cancer Mission.
  • Oversee the annual NIHR submission to the NCRI Cancer Research Database.
  • Work with relevant research managers, to oversee major NIHR/DHSC cancer research funding such as the DHSC financial contributions to the running of the Tessa Jowell Brain Cancer Mission, the NIHR Policy Research Unit on Cancer Awareness Screening and Early Diagnosis and research relating to the NHSE Cancer Programme
  • Providing expert advice to DHSC Science, Research & Evidence colleagues on the cancer portfolio.
  • Undertake _ad hoc_ special project work relevant to cancer research.
  • Act as a focal point for cancerrelated support questions such as nominations for funding committees and/or review of draft documents
  • The postholder will work collaboratively across all NIHR Coordinating Centres which fund or support cancer research.
  • Working across the broader UK cancer research landscape, including with other research funders, research institutions and charities.
