Job Introduction
BBC News is looking for a Search Specialist to join the Growth Team in our Cardiff office.


Our Growth team works closely with our journalists, analysts, and product groups to acquire, retain, and engage users and to ensure the highest level of discoverability for content across digital platforms.


The Search Specialist will help grow BBC News' audience from search channels by optimising the news of the day, evergreen stories and sections, improving the performance of our site on search engines, and developing journalists' skills, knowledge and championing a digital-first culture in the newsroom.

Main Responsibilities

Main responsibilities include:

  • Monitor realtime and long term search trends to identify opportunities for news coverage to target search audiences.
  • Optimise editorial output using keyword research and onpage optimisation.
  • Help journalists plan output by analysing historical search data and predicting future trends and related searches around events.
  • Work with the Growth team to develop new growth strategies and measure performance.
  • Help develop and provide regular reporting on our search performance.
  • Collaborate on product improvements, tech projects, testing, QA, and implementation.
  • Monitor and react to changes to search engine algorithms.
  • Track changes in rankings and help deliver improvements.
  • Conduct competitive analysis to spot opportunities in the market.
  • Keep up to date with the latest SEO developments and news and ensure relevant updates across the organisation.
  • Help develop internal SEO tools to increase efficiency and improve capabilities.
  • Support Growth team training journalists
  • Extensive SEO experience, preferably for a major media/publishing organisation
  • Expert understanding of SEO strategies and SEO content best practices
  • Experience working on enterpriselevel sites
  • Expert understanding of Google Search Console
  • Strong experience with thirdparty enterprise SEO tools (e.g. SemRush, Similarweb, Screaming Frog, etc)
  • Strong experience with data analysis tools (e.g. Piano, Looker studio)
  • Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Collaborative and able to work across editorial, analytics and product teams.
