Due to a number of internal promotions,
ABP is looking to recruit a Deckhand to join the Humber team at the Port of Grimsby.

In this role, you will assist the Coxswain in meeting the requirements of the Port's pilotage service and the statutory duties of the Harbour Authority.

There is opportunity to progress through the ranks from a Deckhand to a Relief Coxswain and then a Coxswain.


You will be a real team player, eager to get stuck in to this exciting and fast-paced industry and work hard.

The key to success in this role is communication, it is essential that you can use your initiative and be proactive particularly when making decisions.


What you'll be doing

  • Assist the coxswain with the boarding and landing of pilots, health, safety and welfare of the vessel/pilot launch (all on board and equipment) and associated shore side facilities.
  • Respond to emergencies within the work area, on board or as directed by the Marine Services Manager, Assistant Dock Master(s), Assistant Harbour Masters or VTSOs.
  • Always assist the coxswain with the "safe navigation" of the vessel/pilot boat whilst underway and keeping a lookout.
  • Ensure safe access and egress and to accompany pilots, passengers and other members of staff who may step aboard the vessel/pilot launch deck either underway or moored up.
  • Assist the coxswain for the safe mooring of the vessel/pilot launch in tidal and nontidal waters. Give situational reports as directed by the coxswain regarding weather and sea state condition to VTS.
  • Keep the pilot launch log up to date and conduct emergency drills at least once per month as instructed by the coxswain.
  • Maintain a clean and safe vessel/pilot launch as directed by the coxswain.
  • Complete relevant training and acquire the requisite knowledge, the current relevant certification and experience to allow eventual progression to the next launch crew tier.
  • Work within a 24/7 365 day roster and assist with ensuring the current service demands are delivered.

What you'll need

  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Merchant Seaman deck ratings qualifications or Royal Navy deck equivalent.
  • Must be willing to undertake further training as necessary for this role and further progression.
  • ENG 1 seafarers' medical certificate or be in good physical health to successfully pass this medical.
  • Be able to work in all types of adverse weather conditions.
  • Computer literate.
  • Knowledge of health, safety, welfare and environmental policies, practices and procedures.

Ideally, you'll also have

  • Basic Fire Fighting STCW95 (not older than 5 years)
  • Efficient Deckhand Certificate (EDH) Deck experience either on a work boat, pilot boat or fishing vessel or Royal Naval equivalent.
  • RYA powerboat level 2 advanced or working towards RYA qualification.
  • VHF operations and procedures (minimum ROC).
  • Personal Survival Techniques STCW95 (not older than 5 years)
  • Elementary First Aid STCW95 (minimum requirement not older than 5 years)
  • Understanding the complexity of working and covering 24/7 365 day rotating roster
  • Understand and be able to work as part of a team.
