About the role

Job Purpose:


As a member of a team, to be fully involved in the work of the Nursery, helping to contribute to the care and education of the children.


Key Tasks:

  • To use his/her professional skills to assist with planning, implementing and evaluating of the daily routines.
  • To observe and interact with children in order to support their learning and contribute to record keeping of children's progress.
  • To collaborate with others involved in children's learning and development (parents, carers, health visitors, etc.) at all times maintaining confidentiality.
  • To keep up to date with current thinking by undertaking continuing professional development.
  • To participate in all aspects of team work within the Nursery including training of students, preparation and care of resources, maintenance of cleanliness and hygiene and contributing to staff discussions.

Activities:

  • Planning, Implementation and Evaluation of the planned activities
  • Attending regular team meetings to review progress and contribute to short and longterm planning.
  • Setting up challenging and stimulating learning situations indoors and outdoors to help children develop skills of sharing, cooperating, organising and problem solving.
Monitoring a specific aspect of the programme, e.g. preparation and provision of well-balanced snacks, opportunities for energetic play and gross-motor activities.

Observation and Interaction:

  • Listening, talking and responding to children in a range of learning contexts.
  • Using activities relating to children's personal needs. Incorporating adult/child conversation and building selfesteem.
  • Providing encouragement, giving help when needed and showing appreciation of children's efforts.
  • Recording relevant observations of individual children's progress and achievements to share with parents, staff and others.

Collaboration with others:

  • Welcoming children and parents as part of induction and helping with liaison at transition from departments
  • Using arrival and departure times to relate warmly to parents/carers and share information.
  • Helping to implement individualised programmes.

Professional Development:

  • Attending Planned Activity Time, In-Service Courses, Workshops and Conferences as appropriate.
  • Using professional library to extend knowledge and understanding.

Team Responsibilities

  • Preparing materials/resources (craft area, home corner, block provision) in such a way as to enable children to make clear and thoughtful choices.
  • Displaying collections of items to encourage and extend children's questions and investigations.
  • Using clearing and tidying up routines as opportunities for adult/child interaction and children's learning.
  • Carrying out safety checks of play equipment before and after use.
  • Undertaking such domestic chores as are necessary for the efficient running of the nursery.
  • Contributing to staff discussions on a range of issues such as cultural diversity, outings and visits, home/school links.

  • Registration with/eligibility to register with SSSC.
