Seismologist with Machine Learning Expertise Engineer

Multihazards and Resilience

This role is based at the BGS offices in Edinburgh, which are situated on the Heriot Watt University campus

Appointment will be at UKRI Pay Band D/S2 - £39,375 per annum.

Full-time - 37 hours a week (some flexible working options may be available including consideration of part-time working and a small amount of remote working in line with BGS policy)

About you


This role requires excellent communication skills, both verbal and written and involves team working so you must be able to work effectively with others and have good time management skills.

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • PhD degree in a topic related to earthquake forecasting, statistical seismology or seismic hazard (S)

Desirable

  • Working with machinelearning algorithms for earthquake detection and catalogue development within recent years (S,I)

EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Research experience on the development of earthquake catalogues using machinelearning algorithms and their benchmarking against standard datasets(S,I)

Desirable

  • Familiarity with the statistical analysis of seismic catalogues(S,I)

KNOWLEDGE

Essential

  • Theoretical seismology and earthquake physics and predictability(S,I)

Desirable

  • Wider knowledge of ML tools enabling highresolution earthquake catalog development(S,I)
  • Knowledge of how forecasting approaches have been applied for operational forecasting, e.g. in Italy (S,I)

SKILLS & ABILITIES

Essential

  • Excellent presentation and communication skills including the ability to present their science clearly to (non)scientists verbal and in writing(S,I)

PERSONAL QUALITIES

Essential

  • Experience in effectively managing own time and workload including multiple simultaneous tasks and in working within a mixed team of scientists in a cooperative way(S,I)
