Job overview

Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Fellow Higher (ST6+/Senior Post CCT) in Ophthalmology (Medical Retina) at Addenbrooke's Hospital, part of Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This post is available from 07 August 2024 for a period of 12 months

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be joining a large medical retina unit led by 4 consultants at Addenbrooke's hospital and will be expected to contribute to a busy outpatient service to patients from the surrounding region. It is supported by staff grades, trainees, optometrist and MR specialist nurses including nurse injectors.

The main duties of the post will include core medical retina disease including age related macula degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusion along with general medical retina disease. There will be opportunity to work in adult inherited retinal disease clinics including Von-Hippel landau clinics. We have regular intravitreal injection lists, regional PDT treatment clinics and argon laser is performed on demand with a new generation multisport Pascal Laser.

There is an opportunity for involvement is research projects run through our Cambridge Eye Research Centre. We regularly update trials and are currently a centre for research into AMD, Sickle cell and hydroxychloroquine amongst others.

There is a scope to perform regular intraocular surgery, focussing on cataract surgery in general and retina patients. Alternatively there is an option to work or observe our medical ophthalmology / uveitis service if the candidate prefers. The candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching of allied health professionals including delivering nurse intravitreal injection training.

The department is supported by an excellent, on-demand imaging service with up to date technology. We have two OPTOS Silverstone devices with widefield autofluorescence, a Heidleburg OCT2 with OCT angiography and Blue peak Autofluorescnce. Fluorescein angiography can be performed on TOPCON, Heidelberg or OPTOS and we have ICG capability. We have further OCT imaging on Zeiss cirrus for routine patients including fundus and anterior segment photography that is fully networked.

Retinal teaching including medical retina, vitreoretinal and medical ophthalmology is consultant delivered at a weekly session and there are plenty of other educational opportunities within the department yearly schedule.

In order to be considered applicants must meet the following essential criteria, MRCOphth Part 3 or equivalent, appropriate exposure to Medical Retina and Vitreoretinal surgery at StR/ST3+ level, completion of core training in Ophthalmology, registration & a licence to practice with the GMC. Applicants must also be able to demonstrate an ability to communicate in English in a clinical environment

Full Registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council at time of application is required.
