Berghahn Books is looking for an Editorial Assistant to provide essential support for the day-to-day operations of the Editorial department and ensure the smooth and efficient application of editorial processes. The Assistant will work closely with commissioning editors and authors to provide administrative support and act as a point of contact throughout the publication process whilst delivering a high standard of author care. Good organization and attention to detail are very important along with the ability to work in a small team.

This role provides an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic self-starter looking to develop a career in publishing.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Providing administrative support for peer reviews and other aspects of the acquisitions process.
  • Working with authors to ensure the timely submission to specification of manuscripts, images, permissions, and other deliverables.
  • Assisting with the transmittal of materials to Marketing and Production colleagues.
  • Assisting with special editorial projects as required.
  • Maintaining editorial schedules and departmental databases.

Knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Some administrative/office experience necessary.
  • Experience in publishing or completion of publishing course is advantageous, but not essential.
  • Must be able to work independently and handle multiple tasks in a small-firm environment.
  • Must be self-motivated, well organized with meticulous attention to detail and have the ability to meet deadlines and juggle priorities.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills are important with an ability to communicate clearly with external as well as internal colleagues.
  • Familiarity with MS Office, especially Word and Excel important.
  • Experience with Microsoft 365 Suite of Business Apps advantageous.
