Job Description

SSQ is excited to collaborate with a leading FTSE 100 energy company in their quest for a Legal Counsel to join their Gas & Power Trading legal team. This presents a unique opportunity to be part of a skilled team of legal experts overseeing a range of the company's operations, particularly in trading and shipping.

The Responsibilities

  • This team engages in trading, procurement, and distribution of natural gas, biogas, and power in the open power markets across Europe through its Gas & Power Trading International division. Additionally, it trades in primary and secondary low carbon products globally via its Low Carbon Solutions division.
  • Renewable power, biogas, and low carbon products are crucial to the company's carbon reduction goals, while natural gas serves as a vital transactional fuel. The team also contributes to the company's ventures in offshore wind, green hydrogen, and blue hydrogen initiatives. Consequently, the legal team is facing growing demands for its expertise.
  • A solid understanding of the European energy markets and contracts is a must for this role, which could involve natural gas, biogas, power, renewable power, emissions, or carbon markets. Typically, team lawyers handle two commodities each, which may evolve over time.

Required Experience

  • Qualified Solicitor in the UK or EU with 3-6 years PQE from a notable law firm or top in-house legal team.
  • Previous experience in an energy or commodities-oriented environment.
  • Familiarity with the liberalized natural gas, power, biogas, or carbon markets in the United Kingdom and Europe.
  • Experience in international commodity trading is beneficial but not mandatory.
  • Knowledge of EFET/ISDA and PPA's would be a significant advantage.
