Clinical Teaching Fellow

Carlisle, Cumbria, United Kingdom North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Our overarching vision is to inspire and support medical students to become outstanding doctors who consistently practice excellent and empathic patient care.

We have a strong reputation for delivering high quality undergraduate medical education both in the classroom and clinical areas, with courses consistently evaluating highly.

Previous experience

Full registration with the GMC and completion of the UK Foundation Programme are minimum requirements.

This post attracts doctors wishing to broaden their experience following the foundation programme but would also be suitable for doctors taking a year between core and higher training or taking an out-of-programme year wishing to develop or expand their existing teaching skills, gain an additional qualification and lead on projects within the department.

Good communication skills, presentation skills and clinical skills, together with an excellent bedside manner are essential requirements.

Applicants should display an enthusiasm for teaching and have good IT skills.

Hours of Duty

The hours of duty will be 40 hours per week if undertaken on a full time basis and will be remunerated according to the level of previous experience.

Teaching fellows are attached to a clinical team negotiated at the time of commencement of the post for an average of one day per week and there are no 'unsociable hours' or weekend responsibilities associated with the post.

According to the post holder's preferences and previous clinical experience, opportunities may arise to undertake out of hours working, however there is no planned on call commitment for this post and any additional work should not in any way compromise the delivery of undergraduate education.

The Cumberland Infirmary itself is a hospital of around 450 beds which continues to offer a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services due to its geographical location.

It is a trauma unit and as such accepts injured patients from the Lake District and beyond.

It goes almost without saying that with the Lake District on the doorstep there are ample opportunities for a variety of leisure activities.

Students and faculty are often to be found hiking, fell running, paddling, mountain biking and swimming their way around Cumbria in their spare time.

These posts provide the opportunity to develop expertise in undergraduate medical teaching alongside ongoing development of skills in a chosen clinical speciality.

At the end of the post, it is envisaged you will have a portfolio of competences and experience that will enhance your future career as a doctor and medical educator.
