Job Title: Locum Consultant Anaesthetist

  • The post available is for a locum Consultant Anaesthetist position based at the University Hospital Ayr (UHA).
  • This role consists of 10 programmed activities, with 8 focused on direct clinical care and 2 on supporting professional activities. Part-time applicants are also welcomed.
  • There may be opportunities for EPAs depending on the service's requirements.

The responsibilities will include providing anaesthesia and perioperative care for various surgical specialties. You will also have the chance to develop sub-specialty interests, such as perioperative medicine and regional anaesthesia.

Located at UHA, the role involves non-resident consultant on-call duties for UHA, covering theatres, providing support for an 8-bed level 2 critical care unit, and assisting critically ill patients throughout the hospital.

NHS Ayrshire & Arran is currently undergoing significant changes. UHA is evolving into a center of excellence for orthopaedic elective surgery, aiming for 3 orthopaedic theatres per day. Other specialties include General Surgery, Interventional Radiology, Ophthalmology, and Urology.

UHC serves as the trauma unit for NHSAA. Obstetric and Paediatric Anaesthesia are centralized at the UHC campus, along with ENT, Gynaecology, and maxillofacial surgery. By April 2024, there will be 15 level 3 critical care beds at the UHC campus.

Besides clinical duties, team members have opportunities for regional and national roles, including examining for the Royal College of Anaesthetists. Various teaching roles are also available for both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Ayrshire provides an excellent living and working environment, with a beautiful coastal setting and expansive sandy beaches. Leisure options include water-based activities like sailing, kite-surfing, and paddle-boarding. The region boasts numerous championship golf courses, as well as fantastic road and off-road cycling routes. The nearby island of Arran offers perfect day trips or short getaways. It is an ideal place to raise a family, with affordable housing and access to top-notch schools. Excellent transport connections are available to lively Glasgow, as well as close proximity to Glasgow and Glasgow Prestwick Airports, providing links to the UK, Europe, and beyond.
