Career Teachers are working with a specialist setting in the West of Leeds who currently require an additional teaching assistant within their complex needs department.

Students at the schoolwork on a differentiated National Curriculum but some achieve upto GCSE levels. Life skills and social communication are key learning skills for their young people.


We are looking for keen and talented Teaching Assistants who are committed to child centred learning, able to plan and deliver the curriculum in an exciting and stimulating way, can communicate effectively with children, staff and parents and are able towork as part of a team.

As a special needs teaching assistant, your main responsibilities are:

  • To support teaching staff in the development and education of pupils including the provision of specialist skills as appropriate.
  • To support the activities of individuals or groups of children.
  • To participate in the education of children, including contributing to their health and wellbeing
  • To support children with special needs, including sensory and/or physical impairments, cognition or learning difficulties, behavioural, emotional, and social development needs, and communication and interaction difficulties.
  • Dealing with the personal care needs of children where appropriate in line with the guidance of the local authority.
  • Support for Gifted and Talented pupils
  • Support for the teacher by providing support for learning activities and supporting the delivery of learning activities.
  • Supporting the maintenance of pupil safety and security
  • Contributing to the management of pupil behaviour
  • Promoting school policies with regard to pupil behaviour.


This role is working with a complex needs department where the students are mostly non-verbal or have communication difficulties, therefore any experience of using communication aids such as PECs or Makaton would be advantageous, but this training can beprovided.

Your main role is to break down the barriers of communication and enable students to find ways of effectively communicating.

We are looking for someone who is patient, empathetic and can diffuse any challenging behaviours from the students in anappropriate and helpful way.
